Hints for Connections #823

Try these category clues before looking at the color-coded answers:

  1. Think of marks or imperfections.
  2. One group describes something enormous.
  3. These are actions that can be impolite.
  4. Look for locations or features on a baseball field.

Answers for Thursday, September 11

The four groups, listed from yellow to purple, are:

  • Yellow — BLEMISH: DENT, DING, MAR, SCRATCH.
  • Green — BEHEMOTH: COLOSSUS, MAMMOTH, WHALE, WHOPPER.
  • Blue — RUDE THINGS TO DO: POINT, SNICKER, STARE, WHISPER.
  • Purple — ON A BASEBALL FIELD: BASE, BOX, MOUND, PLATE.

Why the word bank can mislead

MOUND, MAR, SNICKER, and WHOPPER can suggest candy brands, making that a plausible-looking connection. In the solution, however, WHOPPER belongs with the words for something huge; MOUND goes with baseball-field features, while MAR and SNICKER fit other groups.

How NYT Connections works

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared theme. The New York Times Help Center explains: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” Each group is assigned a color; yellow is the easiest and purple the trickiest, and a word may appear to fit more than one category. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. The NYT Help Center’s Connections page also says the game is free to play and that the archive dating back to June 12, 2023, is available to All Access and Games subscribers.
