NYT Connections game #658 was published on Sunday, March 30, 2025. The 16-word board groups into four themes: average, items pictured on the U.S. Great Seal, spoken phrases in Broadway musical titles, and words that precede “Man.” Hints come first; the full groups are below a spoiler warning.

Hints for Connections #658

Try these clues before reading the solutions:

  • Yellow: A measure of what is typical or ordinary.
  • Green: Four elements shown on a familiar U.S. national emblem.
  • Blue: Words that appear in the titles of Broadway musicals as spoken phrases.
  • Purple: Add the same word after each answer to make a compound phrase.

Spoilers: the four answer groups

Stop here if you still want to solve the puzzle yourself.

Color Theme Words
Yellow Average Mean, Norm, Par, Standard
Green Pictured on the U.S. Great Seal Arrows, Eagle, Olive Branch, Shield
Blue Proper nouns in Broadway musical titles that are spoken phrases Birdie, Dolly, Kate, Yankees
Purple ___ Man Bogey, Crafts, Gentle, Spokes

Why the board can be misleading

Some words invite a plausible connection that does not match the final groups. Birdie, Bogey, and Par can all bring golf to mind, but they belong to three different categories here: Birdie is in the Broadway-title group, Bogey completes a phrase with “Man,” and Par belongs with words meaning average. Tom’s Guide describes the puzzle’s difficulty as 3.4 out of 5, citing its Connections Companion rating; the article does not establish the panel methodology behind that score. Tom’s Guide’s March 30, 2025 guide and The Economic Times’ answer guide report the groupings.

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared theme. Tom’s Guide notes that yellow is the easiest category and purple the most challenging, and that four incorrect guesses reveal the answers. Those are general game details, not a ranking of the four themes in this particular puzzle.
