Full board and answers

The 16 tiles are (, ), &, →, +, ⊾, ✔, $, £, ¥, €, N, O, P, R, and X.

Color Category Tiles How they connect
Yellow CURRENCY SYMBOLS $, €, £, ¥ Dollar, euro, pound, and yen symbols.
Green AND/TOGETHER WITH &, +, N, X Each can express “and” or a form of “together with.”
Blue EMOTICON MOUTHS (, ), O, P These characters can serve as mouth shapes in text emoticons.
Purple “RIGHT” R, →, ⊾, ✔ Each can represent or indicate “right” in the intended reading.

Why the puzzle was tricky

The board invites visual groupings that are not the answer. N, O, P, and R look like a possible letter set, while X, ), (, and + suggest a mathematics-themed cluster. The intended groups instead depend on meanings and uses that cross those apparent patterns: currency, conjunction, emoticon mouths, and “right.”

How archived Connections puzzles work

Connections presents 16 items to sort into four groups of four. Its color tiers run from yellow, the easiest, to purple, the trickiest; overlapping possibilities are part of the challenge. The NYT Help Center says the daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone and is available on the NYT Games site, in the Games app, and through the News app; it also lists nytimes.com/theathletic as an access location.

The NYT archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archived play can contribute to some game statistics, but not to current or maximum streaks, and a completed archive puzzle cannot be replayed. Connections Bot provides personalized difficulty, category, mistake, and guess-by-guess information; the Help Center lists access for All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers.
