Need help with New York Times Connections #607, from Friday, February 7, 2025? Start with the gradual hints below; the full category names and word groups are behind a clearly marked spoiler boundary.

How Connections works

Connections gives you 16 words to sort into four groups of four that share something in common. Each group has a color: yellow is the easiest and purple the trickiest. Some words may seem to fit more than one category, so look for the link that accounts for all four words. The New York Times Help Center explains the game.

Puzzle #607’s word bank is: Blue, Velvet, Run, Tire, Lead, Balloon, Eraser, Head, Bull, Lamp, Cross, Wishes, Direct, Galosh, Earring, and Herring.

  1. Look for verbs that can describe someone taking charge.
  2. One group is made from the same material.
  3. One group connects to a character in Disney’s Aladdin.
  4. For the last group, think of a three-letter color that can come before each word.

Spoilers: answers for Connections #607

Stop here if you still want to solve the puzzle without seeing the groups.

Color Category Words
Yellow Be in Charge Of Direct, Head, Lead, Run
Green Things Made of Rubber Balloon, Eraser, Galosh, Tire
Blue Associated with the Genie in Aladdin Blue, Earring, Lamp, Wishes
Purple Red ___ Bull, Cross, Herring, Velvet

Why the less obvious groups fit

Blue: Genie associations

The four words point to the Genie in Aladdin: blue is his familiar color, and the other entries are an earring, a lamp, and wishes. The category is based on associations with the character rather than a single shared word pattern.

Purple: phrases beginning with “Red”

Add “Red” before each answer to make red bull, red cross, red herring, and red velvet. The shared phrase pattern is the connection.

Green: rubber items

Balloon, eraser, galosh, and tire are the rubber group. “Galosh” is the form used in the puzzle’s word bank; “galoshes” is also common in general usage.
