NYT Connections answers for November 10, 2025
Here are the four completed groups for puzzle #883:
Yellow: PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS
- BELL
- DRUM
- RATTLE
- TRIANGLE
Each of these can be played by striking or shaking it. A bell, drum, and triangle are struck, while a rattle produces sound when shaken. “Percussion instruments” is the broad category that connects all four.
Rank #2
Green: SATISFY, AS DEBTS
- CLEAR
- PAY
- SETTLE
- SQUARE
These verbs can all describe resolving a financial obligation: you can clear a debt, pay a debt, settle a bill, or square an account. The last one is the likely trap, since “square” has several other common meanings.
Blue: WORDS IN A FAMOUS QUOTE BY CAESAR
- CAME
- CONQUERED
- I
- SAW
These words come from the well-known quotation attributed to Julius Caesar: “I came, I saw, I conquered.” The Latin version is commonly given as Veni, vidi, vici. Connections uses the individual words as the category members rather than presenting the quotation as one complete phrase.

Purple: LATIN PREPOSITIONS
- AB
- PRO
- SINE
- SUB
These four short entries are Latin prepositions. They can be translated, depending on context, with ideas such as “from” or “by” (ab), “for” or “on behalf of” (pro), “without” (sine), and “under” (sub). This is the puzzle’s most specialized category and the one least likely to be recognized without some knowledge of Latin.
Why this puzzle can be tricky
The grid mixes ordinary English words with Latin vocabulary, which makes the purple group difficult to identify at first glance. PRO and SUB are also familiar English prefixes or standalone words, while AB and SINE may look like abbreviations or fragments.
The green group creates another layer of misdirection. CLEAR, PAY, SETTLE, and SQUARE do not look alike, but each works with the idea of resolving a debt or account. Once those four are removed, the remaining quotation words and Latin prepositions become much easier to separate.
The blue group is based on a quotation rather than a conventional subject category. There is only one I tile even though the familiar English quotation repeats “I”; the intended group is the set of words represented in the quotation, as used by the puzzle’s answer grouping.
