How Connections works

The New York Times Help Center describes Connections as a game in which players receive 16 words and must find four groups of four items that share something in common. The four groups are marked by colors, from yellow, the easiest, through purple, the trickiest. The words and categories are curated by editors using the Oxford Dictionary, and some words are chosen to seem as though they could fit more than one category.

Where to play or find the archive

The New York Times Help Center lists the Games app, NYT Games website, NYT/the Athletic, and News app as places to play. It says the daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone and is free to play on all platforms; availability and access terms can change.

The official archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. A NYT account is required for archive progress and history. Playing an archived puzzle affects some statistics but not streaks, and a completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed.
