Why the groups can be tricky

Several words can suggest more than one idea, which is part of the puzzle’s design. The New York Times Help Center explains: “Each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky by having words that could fit into multiple categories.” It also says, “Words and categories are curated by editors using the Oxford Dictionary.” The New York Times Help Center’s Connections page describes the game and its archive.

The Help Center says the archive includes puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023, for All Access and Games subscribers. Subscription eligibility and archive access are current product details and may change.
