How the puzzle works

Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four based on a shared connection. The categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the easiest and purple the trickiest. Some words can appear to fit more than one category, so identifying the intended connection is part of the challenge. The NYT Help Center explains the rules.
