Hints for Connections #219
Use these clues in order, stopping when you have enough to solve a group.

- Inside information: Look for informal terms for news or confidential details. Parade’s clue was “The 411.”
- Tilt to one side: Consider words that describe an angle or lean. Parade’s clue was “Related to a certain direction or position.”

Answers for January 16, 2024
Here are all four groups for puzzle #219. The colors indicate the categories as listed by the answer guides.
- Yellow — Deceive: CON, DUPE, FOOL, TRICK
- Green — Inside Info: DOPE, SCOOP, SKINNY, WORD
- Blue — Tilt to One Side: CANT, LEAN, LIST, SLOPE
- Purple — Words Spelled With an Upside-Down Calculator: BOOB, EGGSHELL, GIGGLE, HELLO
Why the purple group fits
The purple set relies on calculator wordplay: each entry is intended to be read as a spelling made from the shapes of digits when the display is viewed upside down. The category is less about a shared everyday definition than a visual trick.

Tips for solving Connections puzzles
Tom’s Guide recommends scanning all 16 words before committing to a group, testing alternate meanings and familiar phrase completions, and keeping possible five-word categories in mind. A tempting set of four may be a near-match if one word belongs in a different group, so use guesses carefully.
Connections presents 16 words across four categories, with colors indicating difficulty and four mistakes allowed, according to Tom’s Guide. That guide described access through the NYT Games app and browser and said the game was free at the time its 2024 article was published; that historical statement does not establish current access or pricing.
