Need help with Friday, January 12, 2024’s Connections puzzle, #215? Start with the spoiler-light clues below, then move to the category names and full word groups when you’re ready.

Progressive hints for Connections #215

Try each nudge before reading further. They follow the puzzle’s color order, from easiest to trickiest.

  1. Welcome to debate club.
  2. Reminiscing.
  3. Mechanics’ chatter.
  4. The sound of color.

The clues point toward discussion, life stages, car parts, and words that sound like colors. The final group depends on pronunciation rather than meaning.

Spoiler warning: category names

The four categories are “Topic of discussion,” “Section of one’s life,” “Parts of a car, informally,” and “Color homophones.” The full answers are next.

Answers for January 12, 2024

The reported intended groups for puzzle #215 are listed below. The dated answer guides agree on these group names and words; the official NYT Help Center explains the game’s general rules but does not provide a direct record for this historical puzzle. See Tom’s Guide, Try Hard Guides, and Connections Answers for the puzzle’s reported solution.

Color Category Words What connects them
Yellow Topic of discussion Issue, Matter, Point, Subject Each can refer to something being discussed.
Green Section of one’s life Chapter, Period, Phase, Stage Each can describe a portion or period of a life.
Blue Parts of a car, informally Dash, Shock, Tank, Wheel Informal names for vehicle parts.
Purple Color homophones Blew, Choral, Read, Rows Each sounds like a color name when spoken: blue, coral, red, rose.

The purple set is the wordplay trap: the spellings do not name colors, but their sounds do. The dated Tom’s Guide article reported a 3.4 out of 5 Connections Companion difficulty rating for this puzzle; its source did not state a sample size or methodology.

How Connections works

The NYT Help Center says players receive 16 words and must find four groups of four that share a connection. The categories are colored yellow, green, blue, and purple; yellow is easiest and purple trickiest. Apparent overlaps are part of the challenge, because a word can seem to fit more than one category. The game refreshes daily at midnight in the player’s timezone and is available on NYT platforms listed by the Help Center, including the NYT Games app and Connections web page. See the NYT Help Center’s Connections guide for current rules and access details.

Playing an older puzzle

The NYT Help Center says the archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archived-puzzle play affects completed-puzzle, win-rate, perfect-puzzle, and mistake-distribution statistics, but not current or maximum streaks. An NYT account is required to keep archive progress and history, and a completed archive puzzle cannot be replayed. Subscription tiers and access conditions can change; consult the official help page for the latest details.
