How Connections works
The New York Times describes Connections as a game where players sort 16 words into four groups of four based on shared themes. Groups are color-coded: Yellow is the easiest and Purple the trickiest, according to the NYT Help Center. The game warns that words may appear to fit more than one category, but each puzzle has one solution.
The NYT Help Center says that “Words and categories are curated by editors using the Oxford Dictionary.”

The NYT Help Center says Connections is free to play on NYT platforms and releases daily at midnight in the player’s timezone. It lists the Games app, NYTimes.com, NYTimes.com/The Athletic, and the News app as places to play. The archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers; access terms can change.
