NYT Connections puzzle #250, for Friday, February 16, 2024, groups the words into comfy shoes, things made with feathers, programming languages and things that can strike. Read the optional hints below before revealing the answers.

Progressive hints

Try these clues in the puzzle’s color order—yellow, green, blue, then purple—before looking at the solution:

  1. Slip into something more comfortable.
  2. Birds of a feather.
  3. Not-so-secret code.
  4. Got a match?

One broader clue: beware the serpent’s hiss. The apparent snake connection points in the wrong direction; look instead to shoes, feather-made objects, keyboards and things that can strike.

Answers for Connections #250

Color Category Words
Yellow Comfy shoes Croc, loafer, moccasin, slipper
Green Things made with feathers Boa, headdress, pillow, shuttlecock
Blue Programming languages Basic, Java, Python, Ruby
Purple Things that can strike Cobra, Inspiration, Lightning, Union

Why the snake words are a decoy

Cobra, Croc, Boa and Python look like they might belong together as a snake-themed set. They do not: Croc belongs with the shoes, Boa with feather-made things, Python with programming languages, and Cobra with things that can strike. The puzzle spreads those tempting words across four different categories.

How Connections works

Players sort sixteen words into four groups of four based on a shared connection. The colors indicate difficulty, from yellow as the easiest category to purple as the most challenging. Four incorrect guesses reveal the answers, according to Tom’s Guide’s February 16, 2024 guide.
