Each hint points toward a shared theme without listing the four answers.
- Yellow: Powder something—think of ways to lightly spread or disperse it.
- Green: What you might smell in a glass of wine.
- Blue: Things to say when surrendering or asking for an end.
- Purple: Words famously pronounced in more than one way.

Spoilers below. Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four according to shared themes. Yellow is generally the easiest category and purple the trickiest, according to the NYT Help Center.

The game is free on NYT platforms, including the NYT Games website and app, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the News app. Historical archive access is different: the Help Center says the archive is available to All Access and Games subscribers.
