The New York Times Connections puzzle released on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 was puzzle #549. Start with the spoiler-light clues below; the category names and complete word mapping appear farther down.

Spoiler warning: The full answers and explanations follow the hint ladder.

Hints for Connections #549

Use these clues in order, stopping as soon as you have enough help:

  1. Yellow: Think of dreamland.
  2. Green: Think of something that can “rattle and roll.”
  3. Blue: Two become one.
  4. Purple: They’ll be there for you.

Connections deliberately includes words that can appear to fit more than one group. If one clue seems to work in several places, set it aside and look for a cleaner set of four.

Spoiler warning: category answers

The four categories in the December 11, 2024 puzzle were:

  • Yellow: UTOPIA
  • Green: THINGS YOU SHAKE
  • Blue: PROPER NOUN PORTMANTEAUX
  • Purple: ENDING IN SYNONYMS FOR “FRIEND”

NYT Connections #549 answers

Color Category Words
Yellow UTOPIA PARADISE, SEVENTH HEAVEN, SHANGRI-LA, XANADU
Green THINGS YOU SHAKE HAIRSPRAY, MAGIC 8 BALL, SALAD DRESSING, SNOWGLOBE
Blue PROPER NOUN PORTMANTEAUX JAZZERCISE, PARALYMPICS, POKÉMON, WIKIPEDIA
Purple ENDING IN SYNONYMS FOR “FRIEND” KETCHUM, PAYPAL, PRIMATE, ROSEBUD

How each group works

Yellow: UTOPIA

PARADISE, SEVENTH HEAVEN, SHANGRI-LA, and XANADU are all names or descriptions for idealized, paradise-like places. This is the most direct group and a good place to start.

Green: THINGS YOU SHAKE

HAIRSPRAY, MAGIC 8 BALL, SALAD DRESSING, and SNOWGLOBE are all shaken. Hairspray and salad dressing are shaken before use; a Magic 8 Ball is shaken to reveal its answer; and a snow globe is shaken to send its flakes swirling.

Blue: PROPER NOUN PORTMANTEAUX

JAZZERCISE, PARALYMPICS, POKÉMON, and WIKIPEDIA are proper-name portmanteaus—words formed by combining parts of other words or names. Once the obvious groups are removed, this set is easier to recognize as a word-formation category.

Purple: ENDING IN SYNONYMS FOR “FRIEND”

The final group depends on the endings rather than the full words:

  • KETCHUM ends in chum.
  • PAYPAL ends in pal.
  • PRIMATE ends in mate.
  • ROSEBUD ends in bud.

Chum, pal, mate, and bud can each mean a friend or companion in the puzzle’s intended wordplay. KETCHUM is especially useful as an ending here, not as a standalone category clue.

The complete 16-word grid

The puzzle presented these words:

HAIRSPRAY · ROSEBUD · POKÉMON · PRIMATE · XANADU · JAZZERCISE · KETCHUM · SNOWGLOBE · PARALYMPICS · PAYPAL · PARADISE · WIKIPEDIA · SEVENTH HEAVEN · SALAD DRESSING · MAGIC 8 BALL · SHANGRI-LA

A practical solving route

  1. Circle the obvious ideal-place words: PARADISE, SEVENTH HEAVEN, SHANGRI-LA, and XANADU.
  2. Look for items that are physically shaken. HAIRSPRAY, MAGIC 8 BALL, SALAD DRESSING, and SNOWGLOBE form a complete group.
  3. With those eight words removed, inspect the remaining entries for unusual word construction. JAZZERCISE, PARALYMPICS, POKÉMON, and WIKIPEDIA are the proper-noun portmanteaus.
  4. Read the leftovers by their endings. KETCHUM, PAYPAL, PRIMATE, and ROSEBUD finish with words meaning friend.

Connections allows category overlap on purpose, so a word that seems plausible in two groups is not necessarily misplaced. The goal is to find the unique division of all 16 words into four groups of four.

Book companion: Puzzle Mania!

Readers who enjoy Connections away from a screen can look for The New York Times Games Puzzle Mania book. It is an official physical collection with exclusive puzzles and paper-based twists on digital games, including Connections. GameSpot describes the edition as a 224-page hardcover, and the official book site links readers to Amazon.

It is a companion for solving more puzzles, not a reproduction of the December 11, 2024 #549 board. The dedicated book Connections: Find the Common Threads in 100+ Puzzles of Wit and Wordplay was listed by its publisher as a 192-page hardcover scheduled for October 27, 2026. As of August 10, 2026, that title should be treated as forthcoming rather than as a currently available book.
