Hints for Connections #913

Connections asks you to sort 16 terms into four groups of four. The categories may hinge on meanings or wordplay, and overlapping possibilities can make a plausible grouping misleading. The New York Times describes the game’s format in its Connections overview; a general gameplay guide from Tom’s Guide explains the color-coded difficulty, from yellow as easiest to purple as hardest.

  1. Light nudge: One set is an exclamation, another concerns imitation, and another is something sweet.
  2. Stronger clue: The final group asks what the letter Y might stand for or indicate.
  3. Last stop before the answers: Look for four words that can complete each of those ideas, while watching for terms that could seem to fit more than one set.

Why the groupings can be tricky

The puzzle’s misdirection comes from familiar words that can suggest more than one association. “Sweet” can describe a confection, while “dummy,” “dupe,” and “fake” point toward things that are not genuine. The final category is a wordplay prompt rather than a set of synonyms: each answer is a possible meaning or use for the letter Y. The labels clarify which connection the puzzle intends.
