Answers for Monday, July 29
The July 29, 2024 puzzle is game #414. Its four color-coded groups are:
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Stadiums | ARENA, BOWL, COLISEUM, DOME |
| Green | Street suffixes | ALLEY, COURT, DRIVE, LANE |
| Blue | Associated with scales | FISH, JUSTICE, LIBRA, SOLFEGE |
| Purple | Things with spouts | FOUNTAIN, GUTTER, TEAPOT, WHALE |
Yellow: Stadiums
ARENA, BOWL, COLISEUM and DOME are all names for large venues used for sports, concerts or other major events. “Bowl” can also suggest bowling, which makes it a tempting but incorrect side association.
Rank #2
Green: Street suffixes
ALLEY, COURT, DRIVE and LANE can each follow a street name in an address. Their meanings differ, but they function as common road or street designations.
Blue: Associated with scales
FISH have scales, JUSTICE is represented by scales, LIBRA is the zodiac sign represented by scales, and SOLFEGE is a musical scale system. The spelling SOLFEGE matches the answer guides for this puzzle.
Rank #3
Purple: Things with spouts
A FOUNTAIN, GUTTER, TEAPOT and WHALE each has a spout-like feature that pours or directs liquid. A whale’s blowhole can act as the relevant opening in this group.
Why this puzzle can mislead
Several words support plausible extra connections. BOWL can point toward bowling, while JUSTICE can suggest a law-related group. Those associations are distractions; the intended sets are determined by fitting every word into exactly one complete group of four.
Rank #4
What the date means
“Monday, July 29” refers to July 29, 2024, not an unspecified or current July 29. Connections presents 16 terms and asks players to find four related sets of four, with categories color-coded by difficulty. The game is available through NYT Games on desktop and mobile.
