Spoiler warning: The answers to the Tuesday, March 4, 2025, NYT Connections puzzle appear below.

This was Connections puzzle #632. If you only want the category hints before seeing the words, stop after the first section. The four groups were:

  • Yellow: Adjectives for nice skin
  • Green: Mess of hair
  • Blue: Dickens characters
  • Purple: ___ chain

The complete Connections groups

Yellow: ADJECTIVES FOR NICE SKIN

DEWY, FRESH, GLOWING, SMOOTH

These words describe skin that looks healthy, attractive, or well cared for. “Dewy,” “glowing,” and “smooth” are especially common beauty and skincare descriptions, while “fresh” can describe a clean, healthy-looking complexion.

Green: MESS OF HAIR

MAT, MOP, TANGLE, THATCH

Each word can describe a dense, tangled, or untidy mass of hair. A mat or tangle is knotted hair; a mop can mean a thick head of hair; and a thatch can refer to a dense covering of hair.

Blue: DICKENS CHARACTERS

BUCKET, PIP, SCROOGE, TWIST

The four words point to familiar Charles Dickens characters:

  • BUCKET: Inspector Bucket from Bleak House
  • PIP: Philip Pirrip, usually known as Pip, from Great Expectations
  • SCROOGE: Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol
  • TWIST: Oliver Twist from Oliver Twist

The group is built around surnames or the familiar names by which the characters are commonly known. “Bucket” is the least immediately recognizable entry, but Inspector Bucket is the detective at the center of Bleak House.

Purple: ___ CHAIN

DAISY, FOOD, MOUNTAIN, SUPPLY

Add CHAIN to each word to make a familiar phrase:

  • DAISY CHAIN
  • FOOD CHAIN
  • MOUNTAIN CHAIN
  • SUPPLY CHAIN

All 16 words from the March 4 Connections board

The full board was:

DEWY, FRESH, GLOWING, SMOOTH, MAT, MOP, TANGLE, THATCH, BUCKET, PIP, SCROOGE, TWIST, DAISY, FOOD, MOUNTAIN, SUPPLY.

How to solve the trickier groups

The yellow group is relatively direct once the skin-related meaning of the words becomes apparent. The main traps are the words that can fit more than one ordinary description: FRESH can describe many things, and SMOOTH is a broad adjective.

The green group is more specialized. “Mat,” “mop,” “tangle,” and “thatch” do not all describe hair in exactly the same way, but they can each refer to a thick, tangled, or unkempt mass of it.

The blue group depends on recognizing literary names rather than treating the words as ordinary objects or actions. TWIST may look like a verb, and BUCKET may look like an everyday object, but both are character names in Dickens’s fiction.

The purple group is a classic phrase-completion category. It is best solved after removing the more concrete-looking words from the other groups: daisy chain, food chain, mountain chain, and supply chain are all established expressions.
