Spoiler warning: The complete solution to NYT Connections puzzle #339, published Wednesday, May 15, 2024, is below. If you only want help, start with the color-coded hints and stop before the answer table.

Spoiler-safe hints

Try these clues in the puzzle’s difficulty order:

  • Yellow: Rule-making with impact
  • Green: Wide open adventures
  • Blue: Uncover hidden truths.
  • Purple: Missing a letter!

Connections always asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The yellow group is intended to be the easiest and the purple group the trickiest, although overlapping meanings can make any category deceptive.

BIT OF LEGISLATION

An act, bill, measure or resolution can refer to a legislative proposal or enactment, depending on the jurisdiction and stage of the process.

GRASSLAND

A meadow, plain, prairie and savanna are all broad types of open, grass-dominated landscape. Their climates and vegetation differ, so the category is about the general landscape type rather than strict ecological equivalence.

FORTHRIGHT

Direct, frank, open and straight can all describe someone who communicates plainly and honestly.

CAR COMPANIES MINUS LETTER

The purple group is a wordplay category. Add one letter to each entry to obtain a car-company name:

  • AURA + H = AURA? The intended company is Acura, formed by adding C and adjusting the spelling pattern; this entry is the abbreviated-looking form used by the puzzle.
  • BUCK points to Buick when the missing vowel pattern is restored.
  • DOGE becomes Dodge by adding D.
  • HODA becomes Honda by adding N.

These entries are deliberately close to familiar brand names, making the missing-letter instruction the key to the final group.

What puzzle #339 contains

The May 15 grid has exactly these 16 tiles: ACT, AURA, BILL, BUCK, DIRECT, DOGE, FRANK, HODA, MEADOW, MEASURE, OPEN, PLAIN, PRAIRIE, RESOLUTION, SAVANNA and STRAIGHT. Each tile belongs to one group only in the published solution, even though several can suggest more than one theme while you solve.

How NYT Connections works

The New York Times describes Connections as a daily game where players find four sets of four related words. Editors curate the vocabulary and categories, and the game has one intended solution. Groups are color-coded by expected difficulty: yellow, green, blue and purple.

Playing this historical puzzle now

NYT says the daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s local time zone. Its archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 and is available to eligible All Access and Games subscribers; archive play can affect selected completion statistics but does not extend a current streak. Access policies and account requirements can change, so check the current NYT Help Center wording before relying on them.

The game is currently described by NYT as free to play across platforms, while Connections Bot and some statistics features have separate subscriber or account conditions. NYT’s statistics page is based on puzzles played from June 15, 2024 onward, so it does not establish a puzzle-specific solve rate for May 15, 2024. No reliable named difficulty rating or solve percentage is available for this date.
