Spoilers: Connections #855 answers

Stop here if you only wanted hints. The category names and tile groupings are below.

Yellow: Metaphors for potentially volatile situations

  • CAN OF WORMS
  • HORNET’S NEST
  • MINEFIELD
  • PANDORA’S BOX

Each phrase evokes a dangerous, troublesome, or potentially chaotic situation.

Green: Bar events

  • HAPPY HOUR
  • KARAOKE
  • LIVE MUSIC
  • TRIVIA NIGHT

These are activities or events a bar might host or advertise.

Blue: Words after a welcome departure

  • ABOUT TIME
  • FINALLY
  • GOOD RIDDANCE
  • SAYONARA

Each can convey relief or finality when someone leaves. On the board, GOOD and RIDDANCE are separate tiles; together they make GOOD RIDDANCE.

Purple: Ending with synonyms for “swindle”

  • AMERICAN HUSTLE
  • COMIC CON
  • GOLDEN FLEECE
  • LUCKY STIFF

Read the final word of each tile: HUSTLE, CON, FLEECE, and STIFF can each be used as a verb meaning to swindle.

How to spot the trickiest pattern

The purple group is the key misdirection: the connection is not the full phrases, but their final words. Because the board includes multiword tiles, those phrases can suggest competing associations. Looking for bar events helps isolate the green group, while recognizing the idioms behind the yellow group narrows the remaining choices.
