NYT Connections puzzle #794 is from Wednesday, August 13, 2025—not today’s puzzle. Find the sixteen words and spoiler-safe clues below; the category names and full answers are farther down.

The 16 words in Connections #794

The board contains these words, shown here in a non-board order:

  • FISH
  • CHICK
  • CLIP
  • ENTRANCE
  • BANGLE
  • GATE
  • CHARM
  • PASSAGE
  • EXTRACT

Spoiler-safe hints

Connections asks players to sort sixteen words into four groups of four that share a connection. Use these clues in order, stopping whenever you have enough to solve a group:

  1. To hold attention like a spell.
  2. A small piece taken from a larger work.
  3. A single — of a band.
  4. Fill-in-the-blank seen with movies.

Category names

These labels reveal the four kinds of connection without giving every word away: CAPTIVATE, EXCERPT, MEMBER OF A GIRL GROUP, and STAR___.

Full answers for #794

Spoilers below: the complete groups are listed here.

Color Category Words
Yellow CAPTIVATE CHARM, ENTRANCE, RIVET, THRILL
Green EXCERPT CLIP, EXTRACT, PASSAGE, QUOTE
Blue MEMBER OF A GIRL GROUP BANGLE, CHICK, GO-GO, SUPREME
Purple STAR___ BOARD, FISH, GATE, STRUCK

Why the groupings can be tricky

RIVET is the yellow group’s verb: to rivet someone is to hold their attention. It is easy to think first of a rivet as a metal fastener, which does not fit the category.

Some words also tempt you toward plausible but incorrect clusters. CHARM, CLIP, and BANGLE can evoke jewelry, while GATE, ENTRANCE, and PASSAGE can suggest access points. In the solution, those words belong to different groups. The purple answers complete “star” to make starboard, starfish, stargate, and starstruck.

TechRadar contributor Johnny Dee called this round tricky based on his own solve, saying he came close to grouping the jewelry items and the access-point words. That is an individual assessment, not an official NYT difficulty rating.
