NYT Connections puzzle #584 was released on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. The key breakthrough is the blue group: DIRTY, DRY, PERFECT, and WET are all martini specifications. From there, the remaining words separate into terms meaning “lacking,” words for a means or instrument, and names that follow “Mr.”

Spoiler warning: The complete word list, hints, and answers appear below. Stop before the answer section if you are still solving puzzle #584.

Hints for Connections #584

These clues become progressively more specific. Each category contains four words.

Color Hint
Yellow Different kinds of means or instruments used to accomplish or convey something.
Green Words that can indicate insufficiency or absence when used in phrases or compounds.
Blue Terms used to describe how a martini is prepared.
Purple Add “Mr.” before each word to identify a fictional figure, title, or character-associated name.

How to solve the puzzle

The most constrained group is the martini category. DIRTY, DRY, PERFECT, and WET can all describe martinis, although they refer to different ingredients or proportions. Removing those four leaves several words that suggest quantity or insufficiency, including LIGHT, LOW, and SHORT. SHY completes that group.

At that point, the remaining words divide into two more indirect categories. MECHANISM, MEDIUM, TOOL, and VEHICLE can each describe a means, method, instrument, or way of producing or conveying an outcome. The four words left over become recognizable when preceded by “Mr.”

Spoilers: the complete answers to NYT Connections #584

Yellow: Means

MECHANISM, MEDIUM, TOOL, VEHICLE

These words can all refer to something used to achieve, produce, or convey a result. A tool is an instrument; a mechanism is a process or system that produces an effect; and a medium or vehicle can be a channel or method of communication, transmission, or expression.

Green: Lacking

LIGHT, LOW, SHORT, SHY

Each word can express insufficiency or falling below a desired amount in a phrase or compound. Something can be light on a particular quality or resource, a quantity can be low, someone can be short of something, and a person or amount can be shy of a target.

Blue: Martini specifications

DIRTY, DRY, PERFECT, WET

  • Dirty: Made with olive brine, which gives the drink a salty flavor and cloudy appearance.
  • Dry: Made with relatively little dry vermouth.
  • Perfect: Made with both sweet and dry vermouth.
  • Wet: Made with comparatively more vermouth.

The exact preparation can vary by bartender or recipe, but these are established terms in martini vocabulary and are the intended Connections group.

Purple: Fictional Misters

BIG, PEANUT, ROBOT, TOAD

Place “Mr.” before each word: Mr. Big, Mr. Peanut, Mr. Robot, and Mr. Toad. The references deliberately cross categories: Mr. Big is a fictional character, Mr. Peanut is a brand mascot, Mr. Robot is a television title and character reference, and Mr. Toad is the classic fictional character.

Yellow Green Blue Purple
MECHANISM LIGHT DIRTY BIG
MEDIUM LOW DRY PEANUT
TOOL SHORT PERFECT ROBOT
VEHICLE SHY WET TOAD

Why this puzzle can be tricky

The martini terms are relatively distinctive, but the other categories use broad or flexible meanings. VEHICLE may initially look like something that transports people, while MEDIUM can suggest size rather than a means of communication. Likewise, LIGHT, LOW, and SHORT do not all look alike until they are read as expressions of an amount falling below what is needed. The purple group is intentionally eclectic: its connection is not a shared subject but the addition of the same title word.

As with all Connections puzzles, a tempting grouping can be a decoy. For example, BIG, LOW, MEDIUM, and SHORT might invite comparisons involving size or measurement, but that does not produce the intended set of four. Looking for a precise phrase or established expression is more reliable than grouping words by their most obvious dictionary meaning.
