Connections #536 answers

Full solution below.

Color Category Words
Yellow APPRECIATION CREDIT, PRAISE, RECOGNITION, THANKS
Green FRAUDSTER CHEAT, CON, FAKE, QUACK
Blue EAT VORACIOUSLY BOLT, DOWN, GOBBLE, SCARF
Purple ___ TUESDAY FAT, GIVING, SUPER, TACO

Why these words belong together

Yellow: APPRECIATION

CREDIT, PRAISE, RECOGNITION, and THANKS all express acknowledgment, gratitude, or approval. This is the cleanest group in the puzzle because the four words share a straightforward meaning without requiring a particular phrase.

Green: FRAUDSTER

A CHEAT, CON, or FAKE can describe someone who deceives people or falsely claims legitimacy or expertise. QUACK is the trap: many players will first associate it with the sound made by a duck, but it can also mean a person who falsely presents themselves as an expert—especially in medicine.

Oxford Spiral Notebook 6 Pack, 1 Subject, College Ruled Paper, 8 x 10-1/2 Inch, Color Assortment Design May Vary (65007)
  • A classroom classic: this 6-pack of 1-subject spiral notebooks helps you identify your subjects at a glance with color-coding efficiency; color assortment may vary
  • The right ruling: these 8" x 10-1/2", college-ruled notebooks fit more writing per page than wide-ruled sheets; each notebook provides 70 double-sided sheets with red margin lines
  • Perect perforation: Dependable micro-perforated sheets retain your must-have notes but still detach cleanly when you’re ready to revise
  • Glide from page to page: Your favorite gel or ballpoint pens will move effortlessly across these smooth pages for A+ notes with minimal ink bleeding or show-through
  • 3-Hold punched: Every notebook comes 3-hole punched to fit a standard binder; take along one notebook or several to save extra trips to the locker

Blue: EAT VORACIOUSLY

GOBBLE and SCARF are familiar informal verbs for eating quickly or greedily. BOLT and DOWN work in phrases such as “bolt down” and “down your food,” giving this group a more phrase-based construction than the yellow set.

Purple: ___ TUESDAY

The final four words complete well-known expressions: Fat Tuesday, Giving Tuesday, Super Tuesday, and Taco Tuesday. This is the most deceptive group because the words do not share one literal subject. Their connection appears when each is placed before “Tuesday.”

A practical way to solve this puzzle

  1. Start with the appreciation group. CREDIT, PRAISE, RECOGNITION, and THANKS form the most direct semantic set.
  2. Look at the likely deception words. CHEAT, CON, and FAKE suggest a person who misleads others. QUACK completes the set once its “fraudulent expert” meaning is considered.
  3. Use the food-related verbs next. GOBBLE and SCARF clearly suggest fast eating. BOLT and DOWN become stronger matches when read as verbs in “bolt down” or “down a meal.”
  4. Test the remaining words as phrase completions. FAT, GIVING, SUPER, and TACO each make a familiar phrase with TUESDAY.

Connections deliberately includes words that can appear to fit more than one group. The game presents 16 words and asks players to find four groups of four. The color order reflects the intended difficulty: yellow is generally easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple, with purple typically relying on the most indirect or phrase-based connection.
