NYT Connections puzzle #440 is the edition for Saturday, August 24, 2024. Start with the spoiler-controlled hints below, then open the category names or complete answer grid only if you need more help.

How Connections works

Connections gives you 16 words to sort into four groups of four based on a shared link. Players can make up to four mistakes, and the game is available on the NYT Games website and app. Yellow is generally the easiest group; green and blue are intermediate, while purple is usually the most difficult and often depends on wordplay. Forbes contributor Kris Holt describes the task as arranging the grid into four groups of four by figuring out their links.

Hints for Connections #440

These clues reveal the kind of connection without listing the category names or answers.

  • Yellow: Think chatter, gossip, or idle talk.
  • Green: How might you move past someone without being noticed?
  • Blue: Think of companies that rent out cars.
  • Purple: Look at the ends of the words for chemical elements.

Category names

  • Yellow: HEARSAY
  • Green: MOVE STEALTHILY
  • Blue: CAR RENTAL COMPANIES
  • Purple: ENDING WITH CHEMICAL ELEMENTS

Full answers for August 24, 2024

Each row below is one completed group.

Category Words
HEARSAY RUMBLING, SPECULATION, TALK, WHISPERS
MOVE STEALTHILY CREEP, SLIP, STEAL, TIPTOE
CAR RENTAL COMPANIES BUDGET, ENTERPRISE, NATIONAL, THRIFTY
ENDING WITH CHEMICAL ELEMENTS ENVIRON, JARGON, LATIN, PLEAD

Why the purple group is tricky

The element names are hidden at the ends of the words: ENVIRON ends with IRON, JARGON with ARGON, LATIN with TIN, and PLEAD with LEAD. The words do not all share an obvious meaning, so noticing the endings is the key to the connection. TechRadar points to the LEAD in PLEAD and TIN in LATIN as examples of the pattern.

A note on the car-rental group

BUDGET, ENTERPRISE, NATIONAL, and THRIFTY are the four brands in the blue set. Their familiarity may depend on where you live: the brands are particularly associated with the United States, so this category may be less immediately recognizable to some international players.
