On 8 March 2023, photographer and artist Lauren Crooke organized a brief nude photo shoot on the steps of Western Australia’s Parliament House to draw attention to sexual assault and violence against women. PerthNow reported that about 70 women took part; the figure and event details are from its account, not an independently audited count.
What happened at Parliament House?
Participants gathered before sunrise on International Women’s Day. According to PerthNow’s report, they first practised posing while fully clothed, then took the nude photograph. The shoot lasted less than two minutes.
Crooke said the work was intended to make the scale and persistence of violence against women harder to ignore. As PerthNow quoted her: “What we want is to shine a light on how many women are being assaulted, it is just not good enough. I think people are unaware still of just how bad it is. . .it is happening all the time still.”
What did the purple tape mean?
Before the photograph, Crooke offered participants purple tape to place around their bodies if they had experienced gender-based violence or sexual assault. The examples in PerthNow’s report included grooming, cat-calling and groping. Crooke estimated that about 90 per cent of participants chose to wear it.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That estimate describes the participants in this event as Crooke reported it; the article did not describe a survey method. The tape was a participant-led marker, not a representative measure of violence against women or sexual assault in the wider population.
Was the shoot authorized?
PerthNow reported that Crooke’s request for official permission to hold a shoot on International Women’s Day the previous year had been rejected. For the 2023 event, Crooke said it went ahead without authorization and without police intervention. This is the report’s account of the circumstances, not an independent legal finding about the site or participants.
