They objected in particular to what they understood as the speech’s elevation of homemaking as women’s highest calling, and said his comments seemed to foster division.
What happened at Benedictine College
Kansas City Chiefs placekicker Harrison Butker delivered the keynote address at Benedictine College’s undergraduate commencement on May 11, 2024, in Atchison, Kansas. The college’s official recap identifies him as the speaker; the National Catholic Register published the full address.
The speech addressed more than women’s roles. The Associated Press reported that it also included criticism of some Catholic leaders, comments concerning Pride, and criticism of President Joe Biden’s abortion policy. Reading the full address helps distinguish its broader subject matter from the excerpts that drew the most attention.
What the sisters said
The Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, a founding sponsor of Benedictine College, issued a public response after the address. In a statement reproduced by the Associated Press, they said: “The sisters of Mount St. Scholastica do not believe that Harrison Butker’s comments in his 2024 Benedictine College commencement address represent the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts college that our founders envisioned and in which we have been so invested.”

They objected to what they described as “the assertion that being a homemaker is the highest calling for a woman.” The sisters also recognized women’s contributions as wives and mothers and through leadership, scholarship, and careers. Their criticism was of the apparent ranking of homemaking as women’s highest calling, not a denial of the value of family life.
They added: “Instead of promoting unity in our church, our nation, and the world, his comments seem to have fostered division.” The statement is attributed to the sisters in reporting by the Associated Press; the exact original publication location is not established here.

How the college and NFL fit into the story
The sisters’ statement should not be conflated with the college’s own event coverage. Benedictine College’s recap records Butker’s role as keynote speaker; it is not the sisters’ response. The sisters spoke as a religious community identified as a founding sponsor, while Butker delivered the address at the college ceremony.
The NFL also distinguished the speech from the league’s position. According to the Associated Press, league senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer Jonathan Beane said: “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity.” That is the league’s reported characterization; it does not make the speech an NFL statement.

What happened afterward
On May 25, 2024, the Associated Press reported that Butker had no regrets about expressing his beliefs in the address. That later reaction does not alter the distinction between his views, the sisters’ criticism, and the NFL’s statement that he spoke personally.
