Norman Reedus did not audition for Daryl Dixon: he read for Merle, and the show’s creators made a new character for him. That casting twist is one of several details that complicate his best-known image. Reedus has also pursued photography, published a photo book, and made motorcycles a subject of his work beyond The Walking Dead. Here are 10 well-documented details, with personal anecdotes identified as his recollections.
How Norman Reedus got into acting
He was working at a motorcycle shop when acting came along
In a 2020 WIRED interview, Reedus recalled moving from Spain to Los Angeles and working at a motorcycle shop in Venice, California. After a party, he said, someone invited him to appear in a play. It is his account of how an acting opportunity first emerged, not a claim that he had set out on a conventional route into the profession.
He named Mimic as his first film
In that same interview, Reedus identified the 1997 film Mimic as his first movie. AMC also lists it among his film credits in its Norman Reedus biography.
How Daryl Dixon came to exist
Reedus auditioned for Merle, not Daryl
Reedus told the Television Academy that he read for Merle Dixon. Michael Rooker got that part, but Frank Darabont liked Reedus’s audition enough to create another role for him: Daryl. The character was therefore written into The Walking Dead for Reedus rather than cast from an existing role.

A version of Daryl’s story would have taken his arm
Reedus also recalled that a proposed storyline would have cost Daryl an arm. He said he worked up a prosthetic concept with a fixed thumb so the character could still handle a crossbow and ride a motorcycle. The idea was ultimately abandoned; it is a story about a contemplated plot, not an event that happened on the show.
Photography was part of Reedus’s life before his best-known role
He studied photography in school
According to Sotheby’s, Reedus’s interest in photography began in junior high and high school classes. He later took part in art shows in Los Angeles with friends from Otis College of Art and Design. That history places his artistic work well beyond a celebrity pastime attached to his television career.

His 2013 book grew out of that work
AMC gives the October 2013 release date for Reedus’s photography book, The Sun’s Coming Up… Like a Big Bald Head: Photographs by Norman Reedus. The title’s unusual phrase has a personal origin: in WIRED’s 2020 interview, Reedus connected “Big Bald Head” to a memory of attending a Laurie Anderson concert, which he described as his first concert.
Motorcycles are more than a prop in his screen persona
He has a motorcycle travel series
AMC describes Ride with Norman Reedus as a travel series in which Reedus and a friend visit a different city by motorcycle and explore local bike shops, tattoo parlors, and restaurants. It gives motorcycling a role in his work separate from playing Daryl Dixon.

His reported collection is a dated snapshot
Asked about motorcycles in the March 9, 2020 WIRED interview, Reedus said he owned 12. That is a self-reported figure from that interview, not a current count.
