Nonnas is a 2025 Netflix comedy whose warmth comes less from a surprising story than from its veteran ensemble and its celebration of food, family, and remembrance. Vince Vaughn and Lorraine Bracco are among the familiar faces at the center of a tale inspired by a real Staten Island restaurant—though the film’s characters and events are fictionalized.
What is Nonnas about?
Directed by Stephen Chbosky, Nonnas follows a restaurant venture built around grandmothers cooking the recipes they know best. Its emotional ingredients are grief, family memory, and the possibility of making something meaningful out of loss. The premise gives the comedy a generous, food-centered heart, even as its story follows a familiar path.

Is Nonnas based on a true story?
It is inspired by Joe Scaravella and his real Staten Island restaurant, but it is not a literal account of the people and events on screen. TIME reports that Scaravella opened the restaurant in 2007 as a tribute to his mother and grandmother. Netflix Tudum says that by July 2015 he had hired grandmothers from around the world to bring their recipes to life at the Staten Island location. TIME describes the film’s women as fictionalized characters inspired by women in Scaravella’s life.
That distinction matters: the restaurant venture and its tribute to family are real foundations, while the film dramatizes them through invented characters and storytelling.

What works—and what feels familiar?
The ensemble is the film’s special sauce
Vaughn and Bracco lead a large cast that includes Susan Sarandon, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Linda Cardellini, Drea de Matteo, Joe Manganiello, Michael Rispoli, and Campbell Scott. The appeal is the pleasure of watching an experienced group gather around a welcoming premise, with the grandmothers and their cooking giving the story its distinctive flavor.
The comfort-food structure has limits
The Associated Press review, published May 8, 2025, praises the film’s earnestness and kindness while noting predictable story beats, clichéd music choices, and Italian American stereotypes. That makes Nonnas a better fit for viewers seeking an affectionate, easygoing comedy than for anyone expecting a sharply original plot or nuanced cultural portrait. Its warmth is genuine in the film’s approach, but it does not make the familiar turns disappear.
