The film’s “hostage” status is partly a headline joke: its protagonist is an expert negotiator, while the movie itself became a prominent Netflix Top 10 title after its July 2024 release.
Its success and its reviews tell different stories. Non Negotiable attracted substantial international streaming attention, but the available critical scores were weak. That makes it better understood as a fast, accessible Netflix hit than as a universally acclaimed thriller.
What is Non Negotiable about?
Mauricio Ochmann plays Alan Bender, described as Mexico’s best hostage negotiator. Bender can mediate a national emergency, but he has struggled to bring the same attention to his own home life.
During couples therapy, Bender discovers that his wife, Victoria, has been having an affair with her personal trainer, Nico. Almost immediately afterward, he is called in to negotiate the kidnapping of Mexico’s president and the president’s mistress. The situation becomes even more personal when the kidnapper—who calls himself Lamb—adds Victoria and Nico to the hostage crisis.

- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
That setup gives the movie two connected hostage situations: one involving the country’s president and one involving Bender’s damaged marriage. He must perform the calm, strategic work of a professional negotiator while confronting an intensely private betrayal. The result is a comedy thriller that repeatedly moves between political danger, relationship conflict, and deliberately absurd complications.
This synopsis does not reveal the ending, but the premise explains the film’s central joke: Bender may be able to talk a kidnapper down, yet his own relationship is much harder to negotiate.
Why the title’s “Top 10 hostage” joke works
The headline refers to two different kinds of hostage-taking. In the story, Lamb holds people hostage and forces Bender to negotiate. Outside the story, the film became a highly visible Netflix title and was described in contemporary reporting as having taken the streaming service’s movie rankings by storm.
A report published around July 31, 2024, said that Non Negotiable had overtaken Find Me Falling to become Netflix’s No. 1 movie worldwide. That specific claim came from FlixPatrol-based tracking rather than a directly retrieved Netflix global engagement announcement, so it is most accurate to treat it as a contemporaneous ranking observation—not as a permanent or Netflix-certified lifetime milestone.
Netflix’s own weekly engagement data provides a more firmly documented measure of attention. For the week of August 5–11, 2024, Netflix placed Non-Negotiable at No. 9 on its Non-English Films chart, with 1.5 million views. Netflix also noted that the film had returned to the chart.

Those figures support the description “Netflix hit” or “Top 10 performer,” particularly during its 2024 breakout. They do not support saying that the film remains in Netflix’s Top 10 now. Rankings depend on both the date and the territory, and a historical Netflix Top 10 listing should not be presented as a current August 2026 result.
A Mexican comedy thriller with an intentionally unstable tone
Non Negotiable is not a straightforward action film. Netflix categorizes it as Mexican, comedy, and thriller, and the story depends on the friction between those modes.
- The thriller element: Bender must manage the kidnapping of a president and other hostages under extreme pressure.
- The relationship comedy: His wife’s affair and the presence of her lover turn a national crisis into an intimate and embarrassing one.
- The political absurdity: Bender’s work requires him to navigate a high-level kidnapping while his personal life keeps intruding on the assignment.
That tonal mixture is also the film’s main risk. Viewers looking for a tightly controlled political thriller may find the marital comedy broad or distracting. Viewers who enjoy high-concept international comedies may see the same shifts as the point of the movie. The premise is designed to keep escalating rather than to remain realistic at every turn.

When was Non Negotiable released?
Netflix made the film available globally on July 26, 2024. The official Netflix listing identifies it as a 2024 movie with a runtime of approximately 1 hour 27 minutes and indicates that it can be downloaded for offline viewing.
The film is entirely fictional. It is not based on a book, a true story, or a documented political kidnapping.

The film’s streaming visibility did not translate into strong critical scores. At the time of the cited retrieval, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 17% Tomatometer score from six critics and a 38% audience score from fewer than 50 ratings. Small sample sizes can change, so those numbers should be treated as a snapshot rather than a definitive measure of every viewer’s response.
The criticism generally focused on the movie’s broad comedy, uneven tone, and movement between marital drama, political kidnapping, and action. That divide helps explain the film’s position: it can be an easy, energetic streaming choice even if it is not a critical standout.
In other words, popularity and acclaim are not interchangeable. Non Negotiable found a large enough Netflix audience to appear prominently in international rankings, while the available reviews were largely skeptical.

Where can you watch Non Negotiable?
Non Negotiable was released as a Netflix film, and a U.S. availability check reported it as streaming on Netflix and Netflix Standard with Ads. That check also listed an approximately 86-minute runtime and a PG-13 classification.
Streaming catalogs change by country and over time. Before watching, viewers should verify the title in their own Netflix region or use a current streaming-availability lookup. The July 2024 release and the historical 2024 Top 10 performance should not be confused with a guarantee that the film is currently ranked or available in every territory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Non Negotiable worth watching?
It is a reasonable choice for viewers who want a short, Spanish-language Netflix movie built around an unusual comic premise. The strongest reason to watch is the collision between Bender’s professional expertise and his personal disaster: he is expected to negotiate a presidential kidnapping while dealing with his wife and her lover as fellow hostages.
Approach it as a broad comedy thriller rather than a realistic hostage-negotiation procedural. If you prefer tightly consistent tone, serious political suspense, or heavily researched true-crime storytelling, the film may feel uneven. If you enjoy international Netflix movies that combine relationship chaos with an escalating high-concept crisis, its 87-minute runtime makes it a relatively low-commitment experiment.

No. Netflix describes the film as entirely fictional and not based on a book.
Did Non Negotiable really reach No. 1 on Netflix?
Contemporary reporting around July 31, 2024, said it reached No. 1 worldwide based on FlixPatrol tracking. Netflix’s own engagement data separately placed it at No. 9 on the Non-English Films chart for August 5–11, 2024, with 1.5 million views. These are historical results, not evidence of a current ranking.
What language is Non Negotiable in?
Its original audio is Latin American Spanish. Netflix regional listings may provide English, Spanish, and Portuguese audio or audio-description options, depending on location.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line: Non Negotiable became a notable Netflix performer because its high-concept premise is easy to understand and unusually chaotic: Mexico’s top hostage negotiator must handle a presidential kidnapping while his wife and her lover become part of the crisis. Its 2024 streaming success is well documented, but its mixed reviews are equally important context. Watch it for the fast, broadly comic collision of politics, action, and relationship trouble—not as a critically acclaimed or strictly realistic thriller.
