In Season 2 of Nobody Wants This, Esther, played by Jackie Tohn, stops being mainly the comic foil in other people’s love story and becomes the center of her own. Her husband Sasha, played by Timothy Simons, grows close to Morgan, played by Justine Lupe, and that closeness pushes Esther to examine her marriage, her unhappiness and what she wants for herself. The closeness between Sasha and Morgan is charged, but the published coverage does not establish that the two become a couple in Season 2. Esther’s arc ends with her asking Sasha to separate, not with a settled divorce.

How Esther’s role changes in Season 2

Season 2 moves supporting characters into the spotlight, according to Netflix’s May 6, 2026 Tudum feature on the show’s scene-stealers. Tohn describes Esther as multidimensional. She is still funny, sometimes goofy and deliberately fun, but the show lets her jokes carry hurt that the audience can see underneath.

Tohn’s own description of the character in that feature:

“She’s silly and goofy at times. She’s trying to be fun. She’s not doing great, but she’s trying, and she’s on her self-realization journey.”

That description matters for reading the season. Esther is not being repositioned as a sudden serious lead; the comedy stays in place, and the new material sits alongside it.

Why the writers gave Esther her own story

Co-showrunner Jenni Konner explained the change to TIME on October 21, 2025. In her account, the writers no longer needed Esther to work mainly as an obstacle to Joanne and Noah’s relationship. Konner said:

“It would be not interesting to tell another story of Esther getting in the way of that relationship.”

She then pointed to the marital questions that drive Esther’s new arc:

“Why did she marry Sasha? Why did he marry her? Here they are with a teenager, and it’s that thing where you look at your spouse and go, ‘Is that all there is?’”

The marriage is therefore treated as a long partnership under strain, not as a new romance being tested by an outsider.

The marriage behind the separation

Netflix’s Season 2 ending explainer says Sasha and Esther were friends who married young after becoming parents. As their daughter grows older, they begin to question what the rest of their life together will look like. Timothy Simons addressed the same theme in a Los Angeles Times interview published October 24, 2025: “Falling in love is somewhat easy, but staying in love is hard.”

At the finale, Esther realizes she needs to explore who she is outside the marriage. She says she loves Sasha and values what they have, but she also feels pent up and angry and wants to explore life as herself. Sasha responds by saying he will give her room to work out what she wants. The ending is a separation, and it should not be read as a statement that the marriage is permanently over.

Sasha and Morgan: what is shown and what is interpretation

The Sasha and Morgan storyline starts as a friendship that viewers can read as containing attraction. Netflix describes Morgan as reliant on Sasha as a pal and confidant, and that intimacy reminds Esther of a closeness she feels she and Sasha have lost. The Los Angeles Times frames the connection as a relationship triangle, noting that Sasha tries to set better boundaries with Morgan while the friendship strains his marriage.

Justine Lupe’s account of the Season 1 dynamic is that its status was deliberately vague: whether the attraction was platonic or romantic was left open. In her description of Season 2, the characters channel that magnetism into a real support system for each other, and Morgan understands that Sasha and Esther are going through something significant. That is Lupe’s reading of her character, and it does not confirm an affair or a future pairing.

Jackie Tohn’s earlier comments point the same way. In a December 30, 2024 interview with Swooon, before Season 2 was released, she said:

“No, I do not want Morgan and Sasha to explore that further. I am married to the man and I love him and he loves me, and Morgan can take a hike.”

Sorting the questions readers ask

The table separates what the published material establishes from what remains open to interpretation.

Reader question What the published coverage establishes What stays interpretive
Is there an attraction between Sasha and Morgan? The friendship is intimate and charged, and it strains Sasha’s marriage (Netflix Tudum, May 6, 2026; Los Angeles Times, October 24, 2025). Whether the feeling is romantic or platonic is left to the viewer, as the actors describe it.
Do Sasha and Morgan become a couple in Season 2? Not established. The closeness is shown, but coverage does not describe a romance. Any future pairing is outside what the published coverage describes.
Does Esther’s arc turn her into a lead? Yes. Netflix and the co-showrunner describe a story built around Esther’s own questions (Tudum; TIME, October 21, 2025). How much screen time she gets relative to other characters is not stated.
Do Sasha and Esther end the marriage? Esther asks to separate, and Sasha accepts that holding on tighter would not help her (Netflix Tudum ending explainer, 2025). Whether the separation becomes a divorce is not stated in the published coverage.
