The premise is borrowed almost whole, and the film does little with it beyond the seasonal setting. Whether that counts as a ripoff or a comfortable genre piece depends on how much you want the original comic engine rather than a cozy reminder of it. This is a judgment about the premise and its published reception, not a scene-by-scene account.
What the film is built on
Netflix’s official title page lists My Secret Santa as a 2025 film starring Alexandra Breckenridge, Ryan Eggold, and Tia Mowry. Netflix’s title page confirms the three featured stars, and Netflix’s Media Center gives the release date as December 3, 2025 (Netflix Media Center listing). A TechRadar December 2025 roundup lists a runtime of 93 minutes and a US rating of PG-13; those are secondary-source figures, not Netflix’s own (TechRadar release roundup).

Netflix’s cast announcement describes Taylor as a single mother who needs work to send her daughter to snowboarding camp. She disguises herself as a man to be hired as a seasonal Santa at a luxury ski resort, and she falls for her boss, which makes the disguise harder to maintain (Netflix Tudum cast announcement). Mike Rohl directs from a screenplay by Carley Smale and Ron Oliver, according to the same announcement.
The casting is the film’s strongest argument for watching. Breckenridge is known from Virgin River, and Eggold from New Amsterdam, as Netflix notes. Eggold also led NBC’s The Blacklist, which is the reason the lead pairing carries a recognisable TV-drama profile into a lighter film.
#1 Best Overall
- From writer/director Nancy Meyers comes a romantic comedy about two women on opposite sides of the globe who swap houses only to discover that a change of address can really change their lives.
Why the Mrs. Doubtfire comparison is unavoidable
Netflix itself introduced the film as “like Mrs. Doubtfire in the reverse.” Its Tudum headline deck, written by Brookie McIlvaine, reads: “Sparks fly in the snow in the next holiday rom-com from The Princess Switch.” That is promotion, not a critic’s verdict, and it is worth keeping separate from the reviews discussed below.
The comparison holds in outline, and breaks down in its details. The table sets out where the two films line up and where they part.

- A Shoe Addict's Christmas
| Element | Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) | My Secret Santa (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Disguise | A man disguises himself as an elderly woman, a nanny | A woman disguises herself as a man |
| Motive for the disguise | A father wants access to his children after a divorce | A single mother needs income to send her daughter to snowboarding camp |
| Setting | A family home | A luxury ski resort, working as seasonal Santa |
| Romantic complication | Not central to the premise | Falling for her boss, which complicates the disguise |
| Tone promised by the premise | Farce driven by the disguise being discovered | Holiday romantic comedy with a family stake |
The change of setting and motive is real, but it is a change of wrapping. The core engine, a parent in disguise doing a job they could not otherwise get, is the same. The film’s ambition to be “the reverse” lies in the gender swap, and that swap is the least developed part of the concept.
Where the premise strains
The disguise has to be believable to be funny
Mrs. Doubtfire’s comedy depends on the audience accepting that a family could miss who is under the makeup, and then enjoying the near-misses. My Secret Santa asks the same of a holiday employer. A seasonal Santa job is a public role with close contact, and a convincing man-in-disguise at a resort depends on how much the film asks viewers to ignore. The premise is preposterous, and the film knows it. That is an argument for enjoying it as a fable rather than taking the stakes seriously.

The comic engine is familiar
The gag structure of a double life, with exposure always one step away, is well worn. The gender reversal gives it a new angle, but a reversal is a single idea. A review that calls the film unimaginative is pointing at this: the concept gives the screenplay one big turn, and the rest has to be carried by performance and seasonal mood.
The mother-daughter motive does the emotional work
The stated reason for the scheme, money for a daughter’s snowboarding camp, is sympathetic and specific. It is also the film’s most credible emotional anchor, because it gives Taylor’s deception a reason beyond the joke. The strength of that motive is the best reason to give the film a fair hearing.

The romance raises the stakes and the strain
Falling for the boss converts a disguise problem into a relationship problem. That is the story’s most interesting pressure point, and also the one that most depends on the lead pair. The films’ published reception suggests the romance carries more of the warmth than the comedy does.

What’s on Netflix: preposterous start, warmer finish
What’s on Netflix calls the framework preposterous and criticises the early execution, then says the film becomes more heartfelt as it progresses (What’s on Netflix review). That reading supports a slow-warming verdict: the setup is the weak part and the emotional payoff is the strong part.
TechRadar: enjoyable despite the implausibility
TechRadar is more positive. It praises Breckenridge’s fit for cozy material and describes the film as an enjoyable seasonal rom-com despite an implausible story (TechRadar review). Both pieces are individual critics’ opinions, not an audience consensus, and neither establishes a viewership or review-aggregate figure for the film.
Verdict: unimaginative, but not a dead loss
The “unimaginative” charge is fair in the narrow sense that the film’s central idea is borrowed from a well-known comedy and only moved to a new location. The “ripoff” charge is harsher. It implies the film trades on the earlier film’s goodwill without adding much, and the Netflix framing, which openly invokes Mrs. Doubtfire, makes that argument easier to press. Calling the film a ripoff is opinion, not a legal or factual claim.
My Secret Santa is a better proposition for viewers who want easy, seasonal romance with a sympathetic single-parent motive than for viewers hoping for a sharp gender-swapped farce. Breckenridge and Eggold give it a credible romantic core. If the premise bothers you, the warmer second half described by What’s on Netflix is the likeliest reward.
Where to watch
The film is listed on Netflix, and the Netflix title page is the place to check current availability. Catalogue availability varies by region and changes over time, so a title page that lists the film is the only reliable confirmation for a given country.
