Major spoilers for all eight episodes of No Good Deed. Margo killed Jacob: she fired the fatal round from her husband JD’s .40-caliber gun. Emily also shot at nearly the same moment, believing a masked intruder was breaking in, but her 9mm bullet was not the one that killed him. That difference—and the two shell casings—finally clears up what happened and why the Morgans blamed Emily.
Who killed Jacob in No Good Deed?
Margo fired the shot that killed Jacob. The finale’s answer is not that Emily missed or that Jacob survived: Margo shot him with JD’s .40-caliber gun, while Emily fired her own 9mm at nearly the same time. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer confirms the distinction between the fatal shot and Emily’s shot.
Why did Margo follow Jacob to the Morgan house?
Jacob had been secretly involved with Margo and was stealing things from neighborhood homes to buy her gifts. When Margo ended the relationship, Jacob threatened to tell her husband, JD, and went to retrieve the gifts. Margo caught him and followed him to the Morgan home. As Jacob entered, she fired JD’s gun. Emily, mistaking the masked Jacob for an intruder, fired too. Margo then left, leaving the Morgans to believe Emily had killed her brother. The official TVLine recap also recounts the relationship and confrontation.
What evidence proves Emily did not fire the fatal shot?
The finale resolves the mistaken assumption with physical evidence rather than a confession. Paul notices two different casings; Leslie obtains the sealed autopsy report, which identifies the fatal shot as .40 caliber. JD’s gun was .40 caliber, while Emily’s was 9mm. The two weapons and the autopsy therefore distinguish Margo’s fatal shot from Emily’s near-simultaneous shot.

Why did Paul and Lydia hide the autopsy?
Paul and Lydia believed Emily had killed Jacob, and they concealed the autopsy and avoided an investigation because they wanted to protect their daughter. Their actions grew out of grief and an assumption formed without the decisive evidence. The reveal changes the meaning of the family’s long-running guilt: they had been protecting Emily from responsibility for a death she did not cause.
What happens to the Morgan house and the other characters?
Paul, Lydia, and Emily
Paul and Lydia choose Leslie and Sarah as the buyers for their Los Feliz home. In the closing family performance, Emily sings a posthumous collaboration with Jacob, who wrote the music, and Lydia plays piano again. Netflix Tudum presents the moment as part of the family’s movement toward healing after Lydia has properly grieved her son.

What the ending says about the show’s larger themes
Creator Liz Feldman told Netflix Tudum, “I wanted to explore the different ways we use communication, or the lack thereof, to really protect ourselves.” The Morgan family’s cover-up fits that idea: Paul and Lydia avoid the truth because they think silence will shield Emily, but it also sustains the family’s guilt. Feldman also said she wanted to explore how toxic masculinity can affect women as well as men.

The house sale ties the family drama to the show’s setting. In Netflix Tudum’s series overview, Feldman says the premise was inspired by her own house search: “This show was inspired by me actually looking for a house.” She says she saw more than 50 homes and wanted to explore the secrets involved in buying and selling one. In the finale, the house passes to Leslie and Sarah, while the Morgans begin to face the truth attached to it.
Feldman credited writer Bruce Eric Kaplan with arguing for a hopeful resolution to the house story: “He was like, ‘Can’t we just give someone a happy ending? Don’t we want it to feel satisfying?’” Leslie and Sarah’s purchase gives the finale that brighter note without undoing the tragedy at its center.
