Nintendo returned to Famicom Detective Club in 2024 with Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, a new mystery for Nintendo Switch. The game launched on August 29, 2024; Nintendo called it the series’ first new story in 35 years.
What is Emio – The Smiling Man about?
The mystery begins when a student is found dead with a paper bag over his head, marked with a smiling face. The image recalls a clue associated with a series of unsolved murders 18 years earlier and the urban legend of Emio, or “the Smiling Man.” Nintendo outlined the premise in its July 17, 2024 announcement.
You play an assistant investigator at the Utsugi Detective Agency, working with police to piece together the case. The investigation involves questioning people, collecting testimony, examining clues, and visiting locations.
How does it fit into Famicom Detective Club?
Emio – The Smiling Man is a new story, not another remake. The series’ earlier games, The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, had been remade for Switch. Nintendo described Emio as the first new Famicom Detective Club story in 35 years; that interval is Nintendo’s characterization in its 2024 announcement.
