Nintendo Music is not a brand-new August 2026 release. Nintendo launched its official soundtrack-streaming service on October 31, 2024, initially in the United States and Canada. Nearly two years later, it has expanded to the web, tablets, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while adding features that make it far more than a folder of game songs.
The app is included with every Nintendo Switch Online tier, including the standard plan. It is free to download, but it is not an unrestricted free music service: access requires an eligible Nintendo Account and an active membership.
What Nintendo Music actually is
Nintendo Music is an official app for streaming and downloading selected Nintendo game soundtracks. It works on compatible iPhone, iPad and Android devices, in web browsers through Nintendo’s web player, on supported tablets, and through compatible Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems. It is separate from the Nintendo Switch console; you listen on a smart device, computer or supported car interface.
Nintendo positions it as a soundtrack service rather than a general-purpose music platform. Its catalog centers on Nintendo-owned or Nintendo-associated games, and its interface is organized around games, characters, themes and moments instead of the broad artist-and-album model used by Spotify or Apple Music.

Nintendo says availability varies by country, so an account in an unsupported region may not be able to install or use the service. The company’s explanation of the service and supported platforms is available through Nintendo Music Support.
When did it launch?
Nintendo announced and released Nintendo Music on October 31, 2024. The original launch announcement covered streaming, offline downloads, game-based browsing, playlists, spoiler filtering and extended versions of selected tracks. Calling it a newly launched app in 2026 gives readers the wrong timeline. A substantial June 2026 update added a web version, tablet presentation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and My Mix, alongside newer soundtrack additions.
The service is still evolving. Nintendo says more music will be added, but it does not promise a release schedule for every franchise or game.
Why it feels better than a normal soundtrack playlist
Game-first discovery
You can search by game, track, playlist or game imagery, then browse Nintendo-curated collections organized around series, characters, moods, battles and other themes. That makes finding music from a particular adventure much quicker than sorting through an unstructured collection of uploads.

- Detachable Joy-Con controllers

Extended versions for background listening
Some tracks offer “Extend to…” options of 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The feature is especially useful for ambient town themes, menu music and other loop-friendly pieces while studying, working or relaxing. It is selective: tracks without the extension control cannot be lengthened through the app. Nintendo’s support site also lists a known issue involving slight interruptions with extended tracks on iOS.
Spoiler filtering
A spoiler filter can hide music Nintendo has categorized as potentially revealing story or late-game content. This is an unusually thoughtful option for players who want a soundtrack before finishing a game. It is a categorization system, not an absolute guarantee that every sensitive cue will be excluded.
Offline listening inside the app
Supported tracks can be downloaded for offline playback. The files remain available within Nintendo Music; this is not a purchase of DRM-free audio that can be exported to another player.
My Mix and play-history recommendations
Nintendo’s newer My Mix feature creates a personalized playlist using Nintendo-related activity. The company has described recommendations involving Nintendo Switch play activity, while the exact inputs and presentation can vary by platform and current app version. Treat it as a convenience feature rather than a transparent, user-tunable recommendation system.

More practical screens and controls
The 2026 update changes where the service fits into daily life. The web version is useful at a desk, the tablet layout gives album art and track lists more room, and compatible CarPlay and Android Auto installations provide in-car controls, including voice-command support through the vehicle system.
What is in the library?
Nintendo describes the service as covering nearly 40 years of Nintendo history, but it is a selective and changing catalog, not a complete archive. Current official listings identify music from series and games including the following representative selection:
| Series or game | Examples listed by Nintendo |
|---|---|
| Super Mario | Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Galaxy |
| The Legend of Zelda | Tears of the Kingdom, Ocarina of Time |
| Mario Kart | Mario Kart World, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
| Pokémon | Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet; FireRed Version and LeafGreen Version |
| Other Nintendo series | Animal Crossing, Pikmin 4, Fire Emblem Engage, Splatoon 3, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Metroid Prime, Wii Sports and Donkey Kong Country |
The official App Store listing is a useful snapshot, but individual titles and regional availability can change. If a particular game matters to you, search for it in the current app rather than assuming that a major franchise is fully represented. Nintendo does not promise every game, every song, every regional version or every dynamic in-game arrangement.
What does Nintendo Music cost?
The app download costs nothing, but listening requires Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo’s support page explains that it is “free to use” only in the sense that there is no separate music charge beyond the membership: Nintendo Music Support.

U.S. prices shown on Nintendo’s online-service page in August 2026 were:
| Membership | U.S. price |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online Individual | $19.99 per year |
| Nintendo Switch Online Family | $34.99 per year |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Individual | $49.99 per year |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family | $79.99 per year |
The standard Nintendo Switch Online plan includes Nintendo Music; Expansion Pack is not required. Nintendo also advertises a seven-day trial subject to eligibility and automatic-renewal terms. Check the Nintendo Switch Online overview for current regional pricing and conditions.
That makes the real decision a bundle calculation. Membership also includes online play, cloud saves, classic games and other benefits. If music is your only interest, the full membership price is still the cost of entry.
Where Nintendo Music falls short
- It is not a broad music replacement. The catalog is focused on Nintendo, so it cannot serve as one subscription for ordinary music, artists and labels from across the industry.
- The catalog has gaps. A favorite game may be absent or only partly represented, and Nintendo gives no timetable for every requested addition.
- There is no standalone music tier. You cannot subscribe to Nintendo Music by itself.
- Downloads stay locked to the service. You cannot export them as ordinary audio files.
- Audiophile features are not the pitch. The service is built around access and discovery, not a published lossless or hi-resolution offering.
- Metadata may be limited. Composer and performer credits should be checked title by title rather than assumed to match a specialist soundtrack release.
- Availability is regional. Device compatibility, operating-system requirements and account-country rules can prevent installation or access.
Setup and common problems
- Install Nintendo Music from the Apple App Store or Google Play, or open music.nintendo.com.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account attached to an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Browse by game, track, playlist, category or image; then stream or download supported music.
- Use the extension control on eligible tracks and enable spoiler filtering if you want it.
- For driving, connect a compatible device and vehicle through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- A game is missing: check the live catalog; do not treat Nintendo’s promise of additional music as a guarantee for that title.
- A download will not play offline: confirm it finished while online, the membership remains active and you used the correct Nintendo Account.
- The app cannot be installed: check country availability, device compatibility and the region of your Apple or Google account.
- The web player will not open: verify that you are using the official Nintendo Music address and signing into the eligible account.
- An extended track glitches: update the app and consult Nintendo Music Support, which documents an iOS interruption issue.
Who should pay for Nintendo Switch Online because of it?
Already a Nintendo Switch Online member
For existing subscribers, Nintendo Music is an excellent included benefit. Its game-aware browsing, spoiler controls, selective extended tracks and offline mode solve problems that a generic playlist does not.

Considering membership mainly for music
The value is conditional. Subscribe if the Nintendo catalog you care about is present and the other membership benefits—especially online play and classic games—also matter. Do not buy it as a substitute for Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube Music, or expecting every Nintendo soundtrack.
Choosing between services
Spotify and Apple Music are better one-stop services for broad listening, while YouTube Music is useful for unofficial performances, remixes and uploads. Nintendo Music’s advantage is authority and purpose-built soundtrack handling, not catalog breadth.
Verdict
Nintendo Music launched on October 31, 2024, but its 2026 expansion makes it feel newly useful. It is a polished, official home for selected Nintendo soundtracks, with extended listening, spoiler filtering, game-art discovery, curated playlists, offline playback, My Mix and now web and in-car support.
It will not replace a general music subscription, and it cannot promise a complete Nintendo archive. For an existing Nintendo Switch Online member, however, it is one of the bundle’s most distinctive perks. For everyone else, the sensible question is not whether the app is free, but whether the Nintendo membership’s full package is worth the price.
