Clóvis Pinho wrote “Ninguém Explica Deus” after conversations about God, theology and questions that seemed to resist easy answers. He later described the song as a personal declaration of faith during a period of spiritual crisis: he would keep walking even while some questions remained unresolved.
Who wrote “Ninguém Explica Deus”?
The songwriter is Clóvis Pinho, who discussed the song’s origins in interviews with Guiame in March 2016 and Pleno.News in 2019. The song became closely associated with Preto no Branco, the musical project whose performance featuring Gabriela Rocha helped establish its public identity.
How did the song begin?
A phrase that stayed with him
In the 2016 Guiame interview, Pinho recalled talking with friends about God, divine glory and theology. He described them as asking difficult, even startling questions. As he considered one of those questions, the phrase “ninguém explica Deus” — “no one can explain God” — came to mind and stayed with him.
Pinho said the song began unusually for him: rather than first finding a melody and fitting lyrics to it, he started with the title phrase and pursued what he called its “soul.” That account makes the words the song’s starting point, not a line added to a tune that had already taken shape.

A separate account of spiritual crisis
In 2019, Pinho described another dimension of the song’s origin: a period of intense spiritual questioning, including questions about the Bible. He said he chose to continue by faith despite not understanding everything. In his words, “Enquanto eu sigo sem algumas respostas, vou dizendo que ninguém explica Deus” — “While I keep going without some answers, I keep saying that no one can explain God.”
These accounts are complementary, but they are not identical retellings of one precise moment. The 2016 interview emphasizes the conversations and the phrase that sparked the writing; the 2019 interview emphasizes the personal crisis and the decision to keep believing amid uncertainty. Pinho also revisited the idea during a 2022 television appearance, describing a search for a tangible explanation of God that left him frustrated before the song took shape after a conversation with friends, as reported by POPLine.

What does the song’s story say about faith and explanation?
Pinho’s explanation is personal rather than a formal argument against theology or science. His recollections place questions, conversation and the limits of what he could resolve at the center of the song. The response he describes is to continue in faith without pretending that every question has an answer.

Guiame’s 2016 interview identifies Pinho as the composer and situates the song within Preto no Branco, discussing the group’s DVD. Later reporting describes the song as a live recording on the group’s self-titled debut album; that is reported release context, not a complete or current catalog listing. Gabriela Rocha is featured in the best-known performance described in the coverage.

The song’s reach grew substantially over time, but the available figures are dated snapshots rather than a current count:
| Reported figure | Attribution and date | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Nearly 5 million views in three months | Guiame, March 2016 | The group’s video at that time, as described in its interview coverage. |
| 700 million views | News Gospel, December 2022: report | The official video, according to the outlet’s report. |
Neither figure establishes the video’s current total. In a 2019 interview, Pinho said the internet helped Preto no Branco’s message reach people beyond church audiences; that is his explanation of the group’s reach, not a measured account of how much online distribution contributed.
