What did Paula Abdul allege?
Abdul filed a civil lawsuit against Lythgoe in Los Angeles County Superior Court in late December 2023. As summarized in contemporaneous reports, her complaint alleged two incidents: one during an early season of American Idol and another in 2015, when she was working on So You Think You Can Dance. The allegations are claims made in the complaint, not established findings. The Washington Post’s account said the suit was brought under California’s Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act and named production companies as defendants.
How did Nigel Lythgoe respond?
Lythgoe denied Abdul’s allegations in a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times on January 2, 2024. He described their relationship as platonic and said: “For more than two decades, Paula and I have interacted as dear — and entirely platonic — friends and colleagues. Yesterday, however, out of the blue, I learned of these claims in the press and I want to be clear: not only are they false, they are deeply offensive to me and to everything I stand for.” He also said he planned to “fight this appalling smear with everything I have.”
What happened to the lawsuit?
A December 2024 Los Angeles Times report said Abdul and Lythgoe settled the lawsuit in its entirety. The agreement was reached on December 9, 2024, and its terms were not released. The report anticipated a request to dismiss the case within 45 days; the cited accounts do not establish whether a dismissal was later entered or whether settlement terms became public. Settlement alone does not establish that either side’s claims were proven.

Why other Lythgoe lawsuits are separate
The Los Angeles Times also reported that two former All American Girl contestants filed a separate lawsuit against Lythgoe in January 2024, alleging misconduct. That case is distinct from Abdul’s complaint and should not be treated as part of her allegations or settlement. The cited reporting does not establish the later status of that separate matter.
