Coverage described its shape in detail, but the sources available do not confirm whether she cut her own hair or wore a wig: Vogue France presented the wig explanation as speculation, while Vogue Taiwan reported it as a wig.
What did Nicole Kidman’s hairstyle look like?
It was short at the back, exposing the nape, with a longer, side-swept fringe. Vogue called it a cropped side-part bob; Vogue Taiwan described an asymmetrical shape, with a short nape and more length on top. Those descriptions capture the visible look without requiring one definitive haircut label.
“Pixie” also appeared in coverage, but Vogue France argued the style did not fit neatly into that category—or into a conventional bob. The most useful description is a sleek, cropped, side-parted style.
Did she cut her hair, or was it a wig?
The hair’s provenance is not conclusively established in the cited coverage. Vogue France speculated, based on its visual assessment, that the style was a wig. Vogue Taiwan reported that it was a wig. The sources reviewed do not include direct confirmation from Kidman or hairstylist Adir Abergel, so neither a real haircut nor a wig can be stated as confirmed.

For a temporary recreation, a short blonde side-part wig can approximate the silhouette; that is a styling option, not evidence of what Kidman wore.
How the hairstyle fit the Met Gala theme
Hairstylist Adir Abergel’s stated inspiration, as reported by Vogue Netherlands, was a sleek cut that would bring out Kidman’s dandyism. The look was intended to honor the event’s theme by celebrating individuality, elegance, and confidence. Vogue Netherlands reproduces Abergel’s statement in Dutch translation, so it is better to treat this as a reported paraphrase than as his exact English wording.

The 2025 Met Gala took place on May 5 under the exhibition theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” and the dress code “Tailored for You.” The theme examined the role of clothing and style in the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora, according to ABC News; the Associated Press likewise tied the gala theme to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring exhibition.

Kidman wore a re-creation of a sculptural 1952 Balenciaga gown, continuing the archival direction she and stylist Jason Bolden had pursued the previous year. Cristóbal Balenciaga devised the original, which was photographed by Richard Avedon for Harper’s Bazaar London in October 1952. Vogue describes the gown’s corset, picot-edge basque, silk organza, multiple petticoats, and silk-satin bow belts; Kidman completed the 2025 look with a black lace scarf and black spandex jersey gloves.

Vogue reported that the Balenciaga couture ateliers spent 700 hours on the look’s hand tailoring and dressmaking. That figure refers to the gown’s construction, not Kidman’s hair.
Speaking to Vogue about Demna’s sketch, Kidman said, “When Demna sent me this sketch, I was inspired by the way he was able to take such a beautiful piece from the house’s past and modernize it in a way that felt so uniquely me.” She also told Vogue that the dress embodied the “Tailored for You” theme. Bolden described their collaboration as engaging with history and design beyond the surface level.
