The visit came amid pandemic disruption: the couple had postponed their planned wedding, and Harrison said at the time that she intended to return to the United States in January 2021.
Why Nicole Harrison came back to Perth in 2020
PerthNow reported on 13 December 2020 that Harrison, then 26, had returned home for Christmas after a year in the United States. She and her partner had spent much of that year confined to their New York City apartment. Their visit to Perth also meant facing two weeks of mandatory quarantine, according to the same report. How the pandemic changed the couple’s wedding plans
Harrison and her partner had intended to marry the following month, but the wedding was postponed during the pandemic. While in Perth, she described the prospect of permanently moving back as a major physical and mental adjustment after a decade away.
“I haven’t lived in Perth for 10 years, moving back here would not only be a huge adjustment physically getting back here, but (it would) take a big toll mentally,” Harrison told PerthNow. She also explained why leaving New York was not a simple decision: “We have built a home in New York, we build a life in New York, and it’s going to take a lot more than that I feel for us to walk away.” PerthNow, December 2020
What happened after the Perth visit
Harrison said in 2020 that she was determined to return to the United States in January. That was her stated plan at the time, not confirmation of her present-day residence. A later PerthNow report records a subsequent milestone: Harrison married James Thomson in New York in October 2021, after pandemic-related delays disrupted plans to marry in her hometown.
