Arthur Cave, the 15-year-old son of musician Nick Cave and Susie Cave, died on 14 July 2015 after falling from cliffs at Ovingdean Gap near Brighton, East Sussex. His family confirmed his death and asked for privacy. A later inquest recorded an accidental-death verdict.
What happened to Nick Cave’s son Arthur?
Contemporary reporting said Arthur fell from cliffs above the Ovingdean Gap underpass on 14 July 2015. He was found at the bottom of the cliff, taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital and died that evening. Police said at the time that the death was not being treated as suspicious. The Guardian’s report attributed those details to contemporaneous police information.

What did the family say?
On 15 July, Nick and Susie Cave confirmed their son’s death in a statement: “Our son Arthur died on Tuesday evening. He was our beautiful, happy, loving boy. We ask that we be given the privacy our family needs to grieve at this difficult time.” The Guardian reproduced the statement.
What did the inquest establish?
When the inquest opened, reporting described the cause of death as “multiple traumatic injuries due to a fall from a height.” The Guardian’s 23 July report covered that finding.

Later reporting on the inquest said coroner Veronica Hamilton-Deeley recorded accidental death. The report also described testimony that Arthur and a friend had taken LSD earlier that day, while noting that no trace of LSD was found in Arthur’s body. That testimony does not establish LSD as the medical cause of death; the reported cause was injuries from the fall. The Guardian’s inquest report is the source for these court details.
