Who is behind the murders?
In TV Insider’s October 11, 2021 recap, the investigation leads to Sonova, a company that hired hitman Paul Lemere to kill people who could obstruct a copper mine. The evidence points to Sonova CEO Sonia Eberhart as the person behind the plan. The recap also identifies one victim’s husband as a participant who acted for money. The case reaches a resolution as the scheme is exposed.
Does Gibbs leave NCIS—and does he die?
Gibbs does leave the team, but he is not killed off. When McGee prepares to return, Gibbs makes his decision plain: “I’m not going with you.” He does not want his badge back, and he chooses to remain in Alaska rather than resume his work at NCIS.

Why does Gibbs stay in Alaska?
His decision is tied to the grief and strain he has carried for years, including the loss of his wife and daughter and the weight of recent events. Alaska gives him a sense of peace, and the final fishing scene with McGee turns that feeling into the reason he stays.
The farewell also acknowledges Gibbs’s ties to the people he is leaving. He shares goodbye moments with Vance, Ducky, and Torres before the last conversation with McGee. That final exchange is both a parting and a handoff: Gibbs urges McGee to find his own rhythm and trust his instincts as he returns to the team.

What the episode means for Gibbs and Mark Harmon
“Great Wide Open” is Gibbs’s on-screen departure from the regular NCIS team, and the episode presents it as a considered choice, not a disappearance. TV Insider’s October 11 recap quoted showrunner and executive producer Steven D. Binder describing the guiding principle behind the character’s path: “Our north star has always been staying true to our characters, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go.”
