Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for playing Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died on March 20, 2026, at age 54. His family initially said he died in his sleep of natural causes. A later report by the Los Angeles Times, citing the Putnam County Coroner, identified cardiovascular disease as the cause of death and listed acute pneumonia and a previous heart attack as contributing factors.
What was Nicholas Brendon’s cause of death?
Brendon’s family announced his death and said he had died in his sleep of natural causes, without naming a specific medical cause. On May 5, 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Putnam County Coroner determined the cause was atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease. The coroner’s findings, as relayed by the newspaper, listed acute pneumonia and a previous myocardial infarction as contributing factors and reported 90% blockage in Brendon’s right coronary artery.
These medical findings came from the coroner’s report as reported in May; they were not part of the family’s initial statement.
Who was Nicholas Brendon on Buffy?
Brendon played Xander Harris, one of Buffy Summers’s closest friends, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The series ran from 1997 to 2003. Xander brought humor and an often-insecure but dependable perspective to a circle of friends facing supernatural threats, making him the group’s relatable “everyman.” The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times described Brendon as a central presence across the show’s seven-season run.
