There is no reliable universal timeout value for an NGINX RTMP stream that drops after a few hours. First determine which connection fails: the encoder-to-NGINX leg, NGINX’s push to YouTube, or YouTube’s ingest session. Match timestamped logs from both ends against YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then make a change that addresses the failing leg.
Find which connection is dropping
Write down the stream path before changing settings. Some setups publish directly from an encoder to YouTube; others publish to an NGINX RTMP application, which then pushes the stream to YouTube. The distinction matters: a reconnect setting for NGINX’s outgoing push cannot repair a failure between the encoder and NGINX.
- Map the path. Record whether the encoder publishes directly to YouTube or to NGINX, and whether NGINX pushes onward. Note the exact NGINX and nginx-rtmp-module versions and the destination URL. Redact stream keys from logs, screenshots, and configuration shared for help.
- Record the failure time. Note the stream’s start time and the precise time it disconnects. Collect the encoder log, NGINX RTMP error log, relevant host or service logs, and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages for that period.
- Compare the evidence. If the source is still publishing while YouTube reports a problem, investigate the relay’s outgoing push and YouTube-facing connection. If the encoder reports a disconnect from NGINX, investigate the upstream leg. Use the logs and health messages to establish what happened; the symptom alone does not identify the cause.
Keep the stream key private when collecting or sharing diagnostics. A key can allow another party to publish to your channel’s stream.
Check NGINX reconnect behavior for the failing leg
If NGINX pushes the stream to YouTube
Inspect the RTMP application configuration that performs the push and verify that the configured reconnect directive is supported by the nginx-rtmp-module version installed and is in the right application context. The module’s directive reference and the “Push reconnect on connection drop” issue concern particular module behavior and configurations. They are not proof that an example setting applies to your build or topology. Check the version and configuration you actually run rather than copying an arbitrary timeout value.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the encoder-to-NGINX connection fails
Start with the encoder’s disconnect messages and the NGINX RTMP error log at the recorded time. Establish whether the encoder stopped publishing, lost its connection, or received a rejection. An outgoing-push reconnect setting on NGINX does not by itself address a failure on this incoming leg.
Do not substitute HTTP or TCP keepalive settings for RTMP reconnect
NGINX’s HTTP keepalive_timeout governs HTTP client keep-alive connections; it is not an RTMP publishing-session timeout. NGINX’s stream-module TCP keepalive options are socket-level probes. RTMP ping or timeout behavior and relay push reconnection are separate mechanisms. Identify the failing leg and use the setting supported by the relevant protocol and installed implementation.

Validate the encoder and YouTube ingest settings
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as a configuration check, not as proof of the cause of a multi-hour disconnect. YouTube recommends streaming to Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and advises testing with representative audio and motion while monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS when your encoder and configuration support it.
- Rate control: YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of four seconds.
- Representative test: Test with the audio and motion expected in the actual stream, and monitor Live Control Room’s stream health.
These recommendations can reveal an encoder mismatch or help validate a configuration, but they do not guarantee that an intermittent disconnect will stop.

Test changes without losing the evidence
- Save the current configuration and relevant logs before editing.
- Change one setting at a time, and record exactly what changed and when.
- Run an extended stream that resembles the normal workload. Note whether the same leg disconnects, and compare the encoder, NGINX, host, and YouTube records.
- Keep a change only when the observed result supports it. If the evidence still does not identify the cause, retain the logs and investigate the failing leg rather than increasing unrelated timeouts.
Common misdiagnoses
- “It always drops after a few hours, so the timeout must be too short.” Duration alone does not identify which component ended the session or why. Use timestamped evidence from each leg.
- “Increasing HTTP
keepalive_timeoutwill keep RTMP alive.” That directive is for HTTP client connections, not an RTMP publishing session. - “TCP keepalive will reconnect the YouTube push.” Socket-level probes and RTMP relay reconnection serve different purposes; a probe is not a substitute for reconnect behavior.
- “YouTube’s recommended keyframe interval is the fix.” It is a useful encoder check, not a diagnosis of a multi-hour drop.
- “A hosting upgrade will solve it.” Consider capacity or network changes only if measurements establish a resource or route problem; the disconnect symptom alone does not.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than diagnosing a particular NGINX deployment, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
