Nezza sang “El Pendón Estrellado,” the Spanish-language version of the U.S. national anthem, before the Los Angeles Dodgers played the San Francisco Giants on June 14, 2025. A video she posted showed an unidentified Dodgers employee saying the anthem would be performed in English; Nezza then sang in Spanish. She said she did so to stand with her community amid immigration raids and unrest in Los Angeles. The Dodgers later said she was welcome back and was not banned from Dodger Stadium.
What happened at Dodger Stadium
Before the Dodgers-Giants game on June 14, 2025, singer and social media personality Nezza—whose full name is Vanessa Hernández—performed the anthem in Spanish. In a video she later posted, an unidentified team employee says, “we are going to do the song in English today, so I’m not sure if that wasn’t relayed.” The clip then shows Nezza singing in Spanish. The employee has not been identified in the reporting. [c001]
What Nezza said about the team’s wishes
Nezza later said she had emailed the team to ask whether she could perform the anthem in both English and Spanish. According to her account, the team declined because the performance window was 90 seconds. She said she arrived believing Spanish was welcome because the email exchange had not explicitly prohibited it. The underlying correspondence was not reproduced in the reporting, so these planning details are Nezza’s account. [c004]
Why Nezza said she sang in Spanish
Nezza connected her choice to immigration enforcement and unrest in Los Angeles. In her initial explanation, she said she felt she needed to do it “Para mi gente” (“For my people”). She later told The Associated Press: “This is my moment to show everyone that I am with them that we have a voice and with everything that’s happening it’s not OK. I’m super proud that I did it. No regrets.”

The performance took place amid protests against President Trump and recent ICE raids around Los Angeles, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. That was the setting Nezza cited for her decision; it does not establish that all fans or viewers interpreted the performance in the same way. [c002]
Was Nezza banned from Dodger Stadium?
No. Nezza said her manager received a call that left her feeling that she and other clients were not welcome at the stadium. The Dodgers, however, told the Associated Press there were “no consequences or hard feelings” and that they would be happy to have her back. The team later told the Los Angeles Times: “She is certainly welcome back at the stadium. She is not banned from the stadium.” [c005]

What is “El Pendón Estrellado”?
“El Pendón Estrellado” is the Spanish-language translation of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The Associated Press and Los Angeles Times reported that the U.S. State Department commissioned the translation in 1945, during President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration, and that Peruvian-American composer Clotilde Arias wrote it. [c003]
