Newsmax aired an approximately 15-second AI-generated video on October 30, 2025, during Carl Higbie’s The Cost of Free Stuff segment and discussed it as though it showed a real grocery-store confrontation. The woman, dispute and apparent incident were fabricated. The available evidence supports a serious verification failure, but not a claim that Newsmax knowingly deceived viewers or that the entire segment was AI-generated.
What Newsmax broadcast
According to reporting by Futurism, Newsmax showed footage of a woman allegedly threatening to leave a supermarket with food after her benefits had been reduced. The clip appeared in host Carl Higbie’s October 30, 2025, The Cost of Free Stuff segment, which criticized SNAP recipients and government assistance.
The broadcast reportedly displayed the chyron “We Are Only Nation Where Poor People Are Obese.” Higbie used the clip to support broader claims about food benefits, health and personal responsibility. The important distinction is that the segment itself was not synthetic: a real broadcaster inserted a fabricated video into a political discussion and treated the depicted event as genuine.
Why the video was considered fake
The woman and confrontation shown in the clip were not a real person and a real incident, according to the available reporting. The footage was identified as AI-generated through its appearance and its apparent connection to the generation tools available at the time.

“AI-generated” can describe several different situations: an entirely synthetic scene, a generated person placed into a real setting, an authentic video altered with synthetic elements, or a genuine clip paired with a false caption. In this case, the reporting describes the Newsmax clip as entirely fabricated. It does not, however, publish a forensic laboratory report, an original-file examination or a platform record conclusively identifying the model that produced it.
Was it made with Sora 2?
The most responsible description is that the clip was reportedly likely generated with Sora 2, not that OpenAI confirmed it. The evidence is circumstantial:
- The clip was approximately 15 seconds long, which reporting associated with the standard-user limit for Sora at the time.
- Its visual style was considered consistent with Sora 2’s capabilities.
- Sora 2 had launched on September 30, 2025, shortly before the broadcast.
OpenAI described Sora 2 as capable of generating realistic video with synchronized dialogue, sound effects and improved physical behavior. Its launch materials also described visible watermarks and C2PA provenance metadata for Sora outputs. None of that establishes that OpenAI generated this particular file. The original file and its chain of custody have not been publicly documented in the available evidence.
There is also an important current-status qualification: OpenAI says the Sora product was no longer available after April 26, 2026. That later discontinuation does not change what happened in October 2025, but Sora should not be described as a currently available service without qualification.

The same video reportedly appeared in Fox-related coverage as well. That suggests the clip circulated through more than one major conservative-media channel, but the available reporting does not establish who created it, which Fox program used it, or how it entered either outlet’s workflow.

It would therefore be inaccurate to say, without additional primary evidence, that Fox created the video or that a particular producer knowingly distributed it. The defensible claim is narrower: available reporting says the same fabricated clip was used in Fox-related coverage and on Newsmax.
What happened after the broadcast?
Ryan McBeth, a Newsmax commentator and intelligence analyst, reportedly flagged the error and sent evidence to Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy. McBeth characterized the incident as an innocent mistake, and said Ruddy indicated that Newsmax would issue a correction.
The available reporting did not independently verify that a correction was broadcast or posted. It also reported that the clip remained on Newsmax’s social accounts at the time of publication. That does not prove that Newsmax never corrected or later removed it; the correction status should be described as unverified, and the current status of any social post may have changed.

The editorial failure was bigger than a bad visual call
The central problem was not simply that an anchor failed to notice an artificial hand, face or background. The clip passed through a chain of editorial decisions:
- A politically useful video was encountered or supplied.
- Its origin and authenticity were not established.
- It was inserted into a factual discussion.
- The presenter treated the fictional subject as a real person.
- Additional conclusions were drawn about SNAP recipients from the fabricated example.
This matters because a fictional individual was used to make claims about millions of real people. Even if the newsroom’s mistake was unintentional, the resulting broadcast still presented invented evidence in support of a real political argument. Intent and consequence are separate questions: the available evidence does not prove that anyone at Newsmax knew the video was synthetic before airing it, but it does support describing the episode as a consequential authentication and editorial-verification failure.

Why short AI videos are difficult to authenticate
Newer synthetic video can be persuasive because it combines realistic motion, voices, sound effects, familiar locations and emotionally legible narratives. A clip does not need to be perfect to influence viewers; it only needs to look plausible for a few seconds and fit an audience’s expectations.
Common warning signs include:
- Hands, teeth, jewelry or facial features that change between frames.
- Text on signs, labels or clothing that shifts shape or becomes unreadable.
- Objects that merge, disappear or change position without explanation.
- Reflections and shadows that do not match the scene.
- Audio that does not align naturally with mouth movement.
- Repeated background details or unnatural movement in peripheral figures.
These clues are useful, but none is a universal test. A genuine video can be compressed, edited or poorly lit; a synthetic video can avoid obvious artifacts.
A practical verification checklist
1. Find the earliest available upload
Search distinctive frames, captions, wording and audio. Later reposts may crop watermarks, remove metadata or add a misleading description. Establishing where a file first appeared can be more useful than judging a single compressed copy.
2. Check provenance and Content Credentials
Inspect the original file for C2PA metadata or other Content Credentials when available. OpenAI said Sora outputs carried provenance information at launch. However, metadata can be removed by downloading, editing, transcoding or posting to a social platform. A file without credentials is not automatically authentic, and credentials do not prove that the event depicted actually happened.
The Content Credentials Inspect tool can help examine supported files, but it cannot recover information that has been stripped or independently prove the truth of a video’s caption.

3. Verify the alleged event
Ask for a location, date and identifiable store. Search local reporting, official records and additional camera angles. Does the alleged policy change match official records? Is there any independent witness or contemporaneous account? A dramatic clip with no time, place or corroboration should not be treated as documentary evidence.
4. Ask the source for the original
A newsroom should request the original file, capture device, time and location, unedited version, witnesses, corroborating material and a documented chain of custody. A reposted social-media clip is evidence of circulation, not necessarily evidence of the event.
5. Use detection systems cautiously
Automated AI detectors can produce false positives and false negatives. Reporting on newer Sora-generated video has documented how difficult it can be for both people and detection systems to identify synthetic footage reliably. A detector’s result should be one input in an investigation, not a final verdict. See the discussion of detection limits in Fast Company and The Washington Post.
6. Label uncertainty precisely
Use “AI-generated” when provenance is established. Use “appears AI-generated” when the conclusion rests on forensic indicators. Use “unverified” when authenticity cannot be determined. Use “likely made with [specific tool]” only when there is evidence beyond visual resemblance, timing or duration.

C2PA credentials can record information about a file’s creation or modification history. That can help establish provenance, especially when the original file retains its credentials. But provenance is not the same as truth.

- Metadata can be stripped or lost during processing.
- A file without credentials is not necessarily real.
- Credentials can describe a tool or editing step without proving who supplied the prompt or why the file was made.
- A credentialed file can still be paired with a false caption or misleading account of the event.
- Platforms may not preserve or display provenance markers consistently.
For that reason, technical provenance should be combined with source reporting, location checks and independent confirmation.
What a newsroom should require before airing viral video
For politically inflammatory or unusually convenient footage, a second editor or standards reviewer should be involved before broadcast. A practical minimum standard is:
- A named source or documented origin.
- The original file whenever possible.
- Metadata and provenance review.
- Independent confirmation that the event occurred.
- A clear explanation of why the footage is newsworthy.
- Review for unsupported claims about unidentified people.
- A visible uncertainty label if authenticity remains unresolved.
Newsrooms should also prepare for post-publication failure. If a video is challenged, the correction should appear wherever the original appeared—including social posts, clips and video descriptions—not only in a later broadcast that many viewers will never see.
The broader lesson
The Newsmax episode shows how synthetic media becomes misinformation through workflow, not technology alone. A fabricated clip can be created by one person, recirculated by another outlet and then given institutional authority by a broadcaster. Each reuse can make the material seem more credible while obscuring its origin.

It is a verification process that asks basic journalistic questions before a compelling clip is turned into evidence: Who made it? When and where was it recorded? What is the original file? What independent information confirms the event? What remains uncertain?
Those questions remain necessary even after Sora’s reported discontinuation. The underlying problem is not one discontinued product; synthetic-video tools and deceptive editing remain available through other systems.
