NewJeans announced in February 2025 that they would use the name NJZ while pursuing activities outside their label, ADOR. ADOR disputed the members’ position and maintained that their exclusive contracts remained valid. The new name did not settle the dispute: a court later barred independent activities and separately ruled that the contracts were valid.
Why did NewJeans announce the name NJZ?
The members announced the name in February 2025 as they challenged ADOR’s authority under their exclusive contracts and sought to continue outside the label. ADOR rejected their position and maintained that the contracts remained in force. The announcement was a statement of the members’ intended direction, not a legal resolution. TIME reported on the name announcement and dispute on March 21, 2025.
What happened between NJZ and ADOR?
The March 2025 injunction restricted independent activities
In March 2025, the Seoul Central District Court granted ADOR an injunction barring the members from pursuing independent activities. After the group performed at ComplexCon Hong Kong on March 23, the members announced a pause in activities; TIME reported that they said they were pausing out of respect for the ruling. TIME covered the pause on March 24, 2025. The injunction later became final after the members did not appeal to the Supreme Court by the deadline, Yonhap reported on June 25, 2025. The October 2025 contract ruling was a separate decision
On October 30, 2025, the Seoul Central District Court ruled that the exclusive contracts between the members and ADOR were valid. The ruling addressed the contract dispute; it was distinct from the earlier interim injunction restricting independent activity. The group’s representative said the members respected the decision but believed they could not return because trust had been lost. That was the members’ stated view, not a court finding. Yonhap reported the ruling and the members’ response.

Did all five members return to ADOR?
Later reporting described different outcomes for individual members, so it would be inaccurate to treat the five members’ status as uniform. On December 29, 2025, Yonhap reported that ADOR said Hanni would stay with the agency and that it had notified Danielle that her contract was terminated. The report documents ADOR’s announcement; it does not establish every member’s status as of October 8, 2026. Read Yonhap’s December 29 report.
What is the later damages claim about?
In June 2026, Yonhap reported that ADOR reduced a damages claim against former ADOR chief executive Min Hee-jin and former NewJeans member Danielle to 33.1 billion won, from an earlier 43.1 billion won claim. This is a separate damages proceeding, not the October 2025 ruling on whether the exclusive contracts were valid. The June report describes a claim; it does not establish a final judgment in that proceeding. Yonhap reported the reduction on June 5, 2026.

What is established as of October 8, 2026?
The available dated reporting establishes the name announcement, the injunction and its finalization, the October 2025 contract-validity ruling, and later agency statements about Hanni and Danielle. The latest located report, dated June 5, 2026, concerns the damages claim. It does not establish the complete status of the group or all its members on October 8, 2026.
