Its many short stories offer changing perspectives on love and connection; the trade-off is that their tone and impact can vary.
What is New York, I Love You about?
The film follows separate encounters and relationships unfolding across New York. The American Film Institute’s synopsis places the stories from Tribeca to Central Park to Brooklyn, while Apple TV describes spontaneous human connections beneath the Manhattan skyline. Those are catalog descriptions, not a claim that the film represents every part of the city.
Because it is an anthology, the film moves among different characters and filmmakers instead of building one protagonist’s story from beginning to end. That structure makes the city and the idea of connection the threads between its segments. The stories can be approached as individual vignettes, though their variety may also make the overall experience feel uneven.
Who directed and stars in New York, I Love You?
The American Film Institute credits eleven segment directors: Jiang Wen, Mira Nair, Shunji Iwai, Yvan Attal, Brett Ratner, Allen Hughes, Shekhar Kapur, Natalie Portman, Fatih Akin, Joshua Marston, and Randall Balsmeyer, also credited in some contexts as Randy Balsmeyer.

Is New York, I Love You worth watching?
It may suit viewers who enjoy ensemble romances, short-form storytelling, and a film that shifts between characters rather than following one central couple. The multiple-director format also gives the segments room to differ in style and mood. If you prefer a tightly unified plot or consistent tone, that same variety may be a drawback.
Critical response has been mixed. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 37% Tomatometer and a 37% Popcornmeter when accessed on October 8, 2026; both are changeable snapshot scores, not permanent measures of quality. The site’s critics’ consensus says, “Like many anthologies, New York, I Love You has problems of consistency, but it isn’t without its moments.” Individual reactions vary, as the short-form structure can make some stories more effective than others.
