This Australia-wide guide covers the fireworks planned for the night of 31 December 2023, ringing in 2024. Sydney’s harbour was the headline event, but capital cities around the country offered their own viewing areas and display times. All times below are local and historical: venues, access rules, transport and schedules may differ in later years, so check the relevant official guide before making plans for another New Year’s Eve.
Sydney: fireworks over the harbour
Sydney’s 2023–24 programme paired a 9pm Calling Country fireworks session with the midnight display. The opening programme also included a smoking ceremony and lighting and projections on the Harbour Bridge. ABC News reported that more than 8.5 tonnes of fireworks were planned for the midnight display, launched from water-based platforms, rooftops, pontoons, the bridge and the Opera House (ABC News, 30 December 2023).
The event guide named central and harbour-side vantage points including the Sydney Opera House, Barangaroo Reserve, and the Royal Botanic Garden areas of Bennelong Lawn, Tarpeian Lawn, Mrs Macquarie’s Point and Fleet Steps. Other listed locations included The Rocks, East and West Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, Cahill Expressway, Embarkation Park, Campbells Cove, Observatory Hill Park, Hickson Road Reserve and Dawes Point. Farther from the central harbour, suggested viewing areas included Pyrmont, Balmain East, Darling Point, Point Piper, Lavender Bay and Vaucluse. These are examples from the 2023 event guide, not a guarantee of current access or visibility (ABC News, 29 December 2023).
The NSW Government and ABC reported 49 Sydney Harbour vantage points for the 2023 event. Access was not the same at every site: many government-owned viewing areas were free and first-come, first-served, with capacity monitored and entry closed when full; some locations were ticketed. Alcohol rules also varied by site. Check the specific venue’s event notice rather than assuming a harbour location is free or open to everyone (NSW Government, 27 December 2023).

Getting to a Sydney vantage point
For the 2023 event, ABC advised arriving early, using public transport and planning around road closures. Its guide reported major city road closures by 2pm, further closures around the city centre and Pyrmont from 7pm, and trains not stopping at Circular Quay from 3pm until midnight. Those restrictions applied to that date only; they should not be used as a travel plan for a later event (ABC News, 29 December 2023).
The City of Sydney’s accessible guide said many viewing sites did not allow visitors to leave and re-enter. Its practical advice for that event was to bring food, water, sun protection, rainwear and medicines; public water refill stations were available. Rules differed by venue, and the guide is specific to 2023 (City of Sydney, 2023 accessible guide).
