New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization is a 2021 concert-documentary filmed at Athens’s Odeon of Herodes Atticus. It brings Bill Murray and cellist Jan Vogler together with violinist Mira Wang and pianist Vanessa Perez for a live program blending music and literary material—not a conventional narrative feature. Where it can be watched depends on country and date.
What is New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization?
Directed by Andrew Muscato, the 102-minute film captures the final Athens performance of the New Worlds tour. Dorn Music, Neda Film and Makuhari Media co-produced it; the Festival de Cannes lists the United States and Greece as its production countries. The Cannes film listing presents it as a special screening centered on the quartet’s live performance.
The stage work was created by Jan Vogler and Bill Murray. The official framing describes the program as musical reflections on love, hope and heartbreak, combining music with spoken or literary material. The result is best approached as a filmed performance rather than a plot-driven documentary.
Who performs in the film?
- Bill Murray — performer, bringing spoken and literary material to the program.
- Jan Vogler — cellist and co-creator of the stage work.
- Mira Wang — violinist.
- Vanessa Perez — pianist.
Muscato is credited as the film’s director in the Cannes production press kit.

What music and writing does the program include?
The official descriptions point to a deliberately wide range of references, from Bach to Van Morrison, alongside Whitman and West Side Story. These names indicate the program’s breadth, but the available official summaries do not give a complete set list or establish the sequence of the pieces. They also do not identify which Whitman poem or passage is performed.
The Cannes synopsis calls the evening a “timeless mix of poetry and music”; that is the festival’s promotional wording. For context beyond the film, Whitman’s Leaves of Grass is related reading, not an established companion book or confirmed source for the particular passage heard onscreen.

Where was it filmed, and what are its technical specifications?
The performance was filmed at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the ancient theatre on the slope of the Acropolis in Athens. The 2021 Cannes production press kit lists a 102-minute runtime, a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, 4K, and 5.1 surround sound. These are the production’s stated presentation specifications, not confirmation that every home-viewing version is available in those formats.

Streaming and rental availability can change, and catalogues differ by country. The available US JustWatch page reported the film unavailable to stream at its check and noted earlier TCM availability ending in December 2024. That is a dated US snapshot, not a current guarantee about any service or other region. Check the US availability listing and the services available in your country before arranging a viewing.

When checking, confirm the listing is current and distinguish a subscription stream from a rental or purchase. The sources here do not establish a dedicated DVD or Blu-ray release or an official soundtrack, so those should not be assumed to exist based on the film’s technical specifications.
