A new Star Wars trilogy from writer Simon Kinberg is in development, Lucasfilm said in April 2025. But that does not confirm three films officially titled Episodes X, XI and XII. A September 2026 report called the first film Episode X and named Jon Watts as its director; the trilogy’s episode numbering and its connection to the Skywalker Saga remain unsettled in the accessible reporting.
What Lucasfilm has confirmed
Lucasfilm included a new trilogy from Simon Kinberg among its theatrical projects “still in development” in an announcement published April 18, 2025. The announcement did not identify the films as Episodes X–XII, or provide a plot, cast or release date. Lucasfilm’s announcement is the clearest official confirmation of the project’s status.

Is the first film Episode X?
A September 27, 2026 report by MeriStation described the first movie as Episode X, directed by Jon Watts and written by Kinberg. It said the project was in early development and that few details were available. The article attributes the Episode X news to The Hollywood Reporter, so the label is best treated as reported information rather than as a detail confirmed in the Lucasfilm announcement.
Are Episodes XI and XII confirmed?
No accessible source establishes that the full trilogy is officially numbered Episodes X, XI and XII. GamesRadar reported conflicting accounts about whether Kinberg’s trilogy would continue the Skywalker Saga and said the episode numbering was unclear. Its January 2026 coverage also described the numbering as uncertain. Until Lucasfilm announces otherwise, “a new Star Wars trilogy in development” is more precise than “Episodes 10–12 are confirmed.”

Who is making the trilogy, and when could it arrive?
Kinberg is attached as the trilogy’s writer. The September 2026 MeriStation report names Jon Watts as director of the first film, but the accessible official announcement does not supply that detail.
GamesRadar quoted then-Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy as saying the trilogy’s timeline takes it “well into 2030 plus.” That is a broad development horizon, not a release date or a promise that a film will arrive in a particular year. No confirmed release date, cast or story details for Kinberg’s trilogy were available in the cited coverage.

How this project differs from other Star Wars films
Lucasfilm’s April 2025 announcement also listed projects associated with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold and Taika Waititi. It separately announced Star Wars: Starfighter, a Shawn Levy film set approximately five years after The Rise of Skywalker and scheduled in that announcement for Memorial Day 2027. Starfighter is a separate project, not an installment of Kinberg’s trilogy.
For background on the most recent released saga films, Lucasfilm identifies The Force Awakens as the first film in the sequel trilogy. That existing trilogy is context for viewers wondering about the Skywalker Saga; it does not establish where Kinberg’s films fit.
