That is the complete list of new Star Wars movies with an officially announced future release date as of August 12, 2026. The former December 18, 2026 date is no longer an active Star Wars release date: it was removed from the schedule, and Lucasfilm did not assign it to another film.
Star Wars: Starfighter — May 28, 2027
Star Wars: Starfighter is the next new Star Wars movie currently scheduled for theaters. Shawn Levy is directing from a screenplay by Jonathan Tropper. The announced cast includes Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

Lucasfilm has described the film as a standalone story set in a previously unexplored period of the Star Wars timeline. Although it takes place after The Rise of Skywalker, it is not being presented as another chapter in the Skywalker family saga. That distinction matters: the film has a defined place in the timeline, but it is not currently described as a direct continuation of Rey’s story or the nine-film saga.
The cast, production progress, and firm date make Starfighter substantially more concrete than the other publicly discussed Star Wars movie projects. The date can still change before release, but it is the only future-dated new theatrical film on Lucasfilm’s slate at the research cutoff.
Announced Star Wars movies without release dates
Lucasfilm and filmmakers have announced several other feature projects. “Announced” does not mean “scheduled,” however. None of the movies in this section has a confirmed theatrical date, and an absent date should not automatically be treated as proof that a film has been canceled.
Rey’s New Jedi Order movie — no date
Lucasfilm announced a Rey film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy at Star Wars Celebration Europe in 2023. Daisy Ridley is expected to return as Rey.
The story is intended to follow Rey after The Rise of Skywalker as she attempts to establish a new Jedi Order. It would therefore explore the future of the Jedi rather than revisit the events of the original trilogy or the prequel era.
There is no official release date, and there is no current official production start or schedule to report. The project remains publicly announced, but it should not be described as definitely coming before or after any other undated Star Wars film. In particular, Lucasfilm has not established that it will be the next movie after Starfighter.

Dave Filoni’s untitled New Republic-era film — no date
Dave Filoni has an announced feature film built around the New Republic era and storylines developed through Star Wars’ live-action television projects. The movie is expected to connect with the broader Mandalorian-era narrative, but its specific plot has not been officially detailed enough to support more precise claims.
The film has no announced title, release date, cast, production start, or confirmed shooting schedule. It is best understood as a feature in development rather than a movie with a near-term theatrical window. Simon Kinberg was reported in November 2024 to be writing and producing a new Star Wars trilogy with Lucasfilm. Later reporting in January 2026 indicated that the project was still progressing, but it remains in early development.
There is no confirmed title, cast, director, production start, or release year. Reports have differed on a major point: some descriptions have suggested a continuation of the Skywalker narrative, while others have characterized the trilogy as the beginning of a new saga. That issue remains unresolved, so the safest description is simply an untitled Kinberg trilogy in development.
A trilogy announcement also does not guarantee three films will reach theaters. The individual movies have not been dated, and the project could change substantially as scripts and production plans develop.
Taika Waititi’s untitled Star Wars film — uncertain, no date
Lucasfilm officially announced in 2020 that Taika Waititi would direct and co-write a Star Wars feature with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The announcement did not include a release date.

Later status reports have continued to describe the film as uncertain or in development. It belongs on a complete list of publicly announced projects, but it is less concretely scheduled than Starfighter. There is no confirmed cast, production start, or current theatrical date to add.
Donald Glover’s Lando project — uncertain, no date
Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover have been associated with a project about Lando Calrissian. The concept has changed over time: it was once discussed as a Disney+ series and was later described as a possible theatrical film. Later reporting indicated that a script exists, but that does not establish that production is imminent.
There is no official release date, production start, completed cast announcement, or current theatrical schedule. For that reason, “Lando project” or “Lando film in development” is more accurate than treating it as a movie that has entered production.
Paused or especially uncertain projects
James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi — on hold, no date
James Mangold’s announced Dawn of the Jedi film would examine the distant early history of the Jedi, long before the familiar Skywalker-era stories. Mangold and Beau Willimon have written a script.

Its status is more concerning than that of a merely undated project. In a January 2026 exit interview, Kathleen Kennedy described the film as on hold or on the back burner. No release date has been announced, and there is no basis for placing it on an active release calendar.
That does not make the film a confirmed cancellation. It means readers should treat it as paused and uncertain unless Lucasfilm announces a renewed schedule, production start, or substantially updated plan.

What is not an upcoming new Star Wars movie?
Several titles appear in searches for future Star Wars releases even though they do not belong in a list of upcoming new theatrical films.
Recent release, television project, or re-release?
- The Mandalorian and Grogu: This film was released theatrically on May 22, 2026. It is the most recent new Star Wars movie, not a future release.
- Ahsoka season 2: This is a television season planned for 2027, not a theatrical movie.
- Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord: This is an animated series, not a theatrical feature.
- Star Wars: A New Hope 50th-anniversary release: A planned theatrical re-release of an existing movie is not a new Star Wars film. Lucasfilm has referenced a 2027 anniversary celebration, but that should be kept separate from the new-film slate.
Older lists may also include Rogue Squadron, a Rian Johnson trilogy, a Ben Solo film, or A Droid Story. Those projects have been previously discussed, reported, or announced at different times, but they do not have a current confirmed release date in this guide. They should not be presented as active upcoming movies unless Lucasfilm or a highly authoritative current report establishes that a specific project has been revived.
What should you watch before Starfighter?
There is no announced requirement to watch a particular television series before Starfighter. The movie is described as a standalone adventure, even though its setting is approximately five years after The Rise of Skywalker.
If you want the most direct timeline context, watch The Rise of Skywalker first. A full nine-film saga rewatch is optional rather than necessary, since Starfighter is not being marketed as a continuation of the Skywalker family story. The Mandalorian-era series may help explain the broader post-Return of the Jedi landscape, but there is no confirmed statement that Starfighter depends on their characters or plotlines.
For a physical rewatch, a Star Wars 4K UHD collection can serve as an optional companion for revisiting the existing saga; edition, price, stock, and regional availability should be checked before buying.
