Netflix’s December 2024 schedule brought together three unusually prominent events: Maria, Pablo Larraín’s biographical drama starring Angelina Jolie; Squid Game Season 2; and Netflix’s first-ever NFL broadcast, a Christmas Day doubleheader featuring the Chiefs, Steelers, Ravens and Texans. The month also added the spy thriller Black Doves, the airport thriller Carry-On, holiday films, documentaries, comedy specials, returning series and a new Squid Game mobile game.
The calendar below is primarily the U.S. schedule announced for December 2024. Netflix availability can differ by country, and catalog titles may leave the service after their original listing dates.

Most anticipated Netflix titles of the month
Maria: Angelina Jolie plays Maria Callas
Directed by Pablo Larraín, Maria focuses on the final period of opera singer Maria Callas’s life. Angelina Jolie leads the film as Callas, making it a performance-centered biopic rather than a conventional overview of the singer’s entire career. Its limited theatrical release in the United States preceded the December 11 Netflix streaming debut.
The film was one of December’s major awards-season releases, but its awards prospects—and any claim about individual nominations or wins—should not be treated as settled merely because it was positioned as prestige programming.
Black Doves: a London spy thriller
Arriving December 5, Black Doves stars Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw in a spy thriller set in London. It was one of the month’s strongest options for viewers looking for a serialized espionage story rather than a holiday film or returning franchise.

Carry-On: a Christmas Eve airport thriller
Carry-On arrived December 13 with a high-concept premise: a young TSA agent is pressured into permitting a dangerous package onto a flight on Christmas Eve. Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Jason Bateman and Danielle Deadwyler headline the cast. Its seasonal setting made it a natural alternative to gentler Christmas viewing.
Squid Game Season 2: Gi-hun returns
Season 2 continued the story of Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, three years after his victory in the first game. Netflix’s official setup described a revenge-driven return to the deadly competition. The release on December 26 made it the month’s major returning franchise event, arriving after the December 17 mobile game but before the end of the holiday period.
It is important to keep the related properties separate. Squid Game is the scripted drama; Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality competition; Squid Game: Unleashed is the mobile game; and Squid Game: The Experience is a live fan attraction. They share the franchise, but they are not interchangeable releases.
A natural fan-merchandise tie-in
Viewers planning a watch party, cosplay, Halloween event or fan gift may want to compare a Squid Game costume before buying. Netflix has documented official and licensed franchise merchandise, including costumes, masks, tracksuits, hoodies, sneakers, toys and collectibles. Marketplace listings can differ substantially in license status, sizing, materials, price and seller quality, so check those details rather than assuming that every green tracksuit or guard uniform is official.

Netflix’s Christmas doubleheader was its first-ever NFL broadcast and a significant expansion into live programming. CBS Sports served as the production partner. Mariah Carey opened the event with a holiday performance, while Beyoncé headlined the halftime show during Ravens–Texans.

The event was a time-specific broadcast on December 25, 2024. It should not be described as an ongoing live stream or as a guarantee that the games remain available in the same form. Netflix also announced commercial partnerships for the event involving FanDuel, Verizon, Snickers, Johnnie Walker, WhatsApp, Call of Duty, Duolingo, Google Pixel and BMW; those were historical event sponsorships, not necessarily current offers or affiliate opportunities.
Holiday and family viewing
December’s family and seasonal lineup extended well beyond the NFL. That Christmas, released December 4, adapted Richard Curtis’s children’s-book trilogy into an animated feature directed by Simon Otto. Mary, released December 6, offered a biblical drama aimed at a different kind of holiday-season audience.
For lighter viewing, Sabrina Carpenter’s musical holiday special arrived December 6, The Great British Baking Show: Holidays returned for Season 7 on December 9, and Michelle Buteau closed the month with A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall on December 31. Families with younger viewers also had Season 1 of Rubble & Crew on December 9.

- For a returning global franchise: Watch Squid Game Season 2, with Squid Game: Unleashed as a separate game-related extra.

- For a fast seasonal thriller: Try Carry-On.
- For live sports: The NFL Christmas Gameday doubleheader was the central event on December 25.
